Softball: Lasers fall short to Wisconsin-Stout, 6-5, and Salve Regina, 9-1, Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla. - Sophomore Eryn Sheeley of the Lasell Univeristy softball team went a combined 3-of-5 batting, with two RBIs, two runs, two walks, one home run and one double, during losses to Wisconsin-Stout, 6-5, and Salve Regina, 9-1, in five innings Tuesday during the spring-break trip.

During the first game against the Blue Devils (8-6), sophomore Ally Kirck (2 of 4, RBI, double), and junior Angelena Piers (2 for 4) led the way for the Lasers (1-5). Sheeley and freshman Samara Turgeon finished with hits during the game against the Seahawks (1-0).

Game 1 (Wisconsin-Stout 6, Lasell 5):

The Devils raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning behind a one-run double by Maggie O'Brien, a three-run homer by Kate Funk and a solo home run by Lexy Kupczak. Sheeley put the Lasers on the board with a one-run shot in the second, and then Wisconsin-Stout extended its lead to 6-1 on an RBI single by Taylor Mancl in the third.

Freshman Mackenzie Still scored on a wild pitch for Lasell in the bottom of the third, trimming the deficit down to four. During the fourth, the Lasers kept chipping away and came to within one with a three-run effort. Kirck tallied an RBI single, and then two at-bats later, senior Brianna Gendreau connected on a two-run single, trimming the deficit to 6-5. 

The Devils were able to close out the win, as Mackensie Wolterstorff earned the win with five innings of relief pitching. She allowed six hits, three runs, all of which were earned, and three walks, while striking out nine. Funk (2 for 3, 3 RBIs, homer, run, walk) and Kupczak (2 of 4, homer, RBI, run) led the way for Wisconsin-Stout.

The Devils held a 9-8 advantage in hits. Lasell made two errors and Wisconsin-Stout suffered one miscue.

Game 2 (Salve Regina 9, Lasell 1 - 5 innings):

The Seahawks received a hit from eight different student-athletes, as a six-run performance in the second inning gave the unit a 7-0 cushion. The surge included a bases-clearing, three-run triple by Katie Ramos and a two-run single by Christina Braid.

Turgeon drew a one-out walk in the third, and then scored during the ensuing at-bat on an RBI double to right-center by Sheeley. Salve Regina closed out the game with a run in the fourth and fifth innings.

Alex Kelly earned the win for the Seahawks, going three innings, while allowing one hit, one run, which was earned, and three walks. She struck out five batters.

The Lasers will compete against Simpson Thursday at 3:30 p.m. from the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex in Leesburg, Florida.
