Norton, MA- The Lasell University men's volleyball team traveled to Wheaton College on Saturday for a double header matchup against Hobart and Wheaton, losing both matches 3-2.
Vs. Hobart-
Lasell went five sets in a back-and-forth match, showing strong offense at times but struggling with consistency, eventually falling 3-2. The Lasers lost set 1: 25-21, won set 2: 25-15, won set 3: 25-15, lost set 4: 25-21, and lost set 5: 15-8
Jasper Schultz led the way with 17 kills, while Paten Buckwalter was highly efficient with 8 kills on a .533 hitting percentage. Branch Barnes (19 assists) and Trystan Maloney (18 assists, 2 aces) helped run the offense. Defensively, Ryan Mesnik had 15 digs, and Nathaniel Cobuzzi added 5 blocks at the net.
Lasell hit its stride in sets two and three, including a dominant .611 in the third, but errors and inconsistency in the final two sets made the difference.
Vs. Wheaton-
Lasell went another five sets against Wheaton in their second match up the day but continued to battle inconsistency. The Lasers lost set 1:25-23, won set 2: 25-17, lost set 3: 27-25, won set 4: 26-24 and lost set 5: 16-14
Matthew Mitko led the attack with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Barnes added 13 kills and 3 aces. Cody Bonilla chipped in 9 kills, and Noah Thetford was efficient with 7 kills on a .429 hitting percentage. Buckwalter also stood out, hitting .667 with 4 kills. Maloney ran the offense with 34 assists, and Mesnik anchored the defense with 11 digs.
As a team, Lasell hit .225, highlighted by a dominant .524 performance in set two, but errors, especially from the service line, proved costly in the tight five-set match.
