Newton, MA— Emerson College women's volleyball earned a 3-1 decision over the Lasers in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match on Saturday afternoon during Lasell College's Family, Friends, and Alumni Weekend. The contest also marked Senior Day for the two Laser seniors, Melanie Costa (Ludlow, MA) and Megan Gobeille (Lincoln, RI). Lasell finished the day with a 9-15 record (4-5 GNAC), while the Lions victory boosted their record to 17-8 overall (6-1 GNAC).
Emerson rallied back from a deficit in the first set to earn a narrow 25-22 advantage. In the second set, the Lions benefitted from the momentum of the first set and came out to an early lead, which the Lasers could not diffuse, leading to a 25-14 Emerson win. Lasell turned the tables in the third set with a 25-19 victory before the Lions settled the match, 25-19.
At the outcome of the contest, Emerson produced the advantage over Lasell on offense with a .173 hitting percentage, and on defense with a 94-83 edge in digs. Lion libero Sara Rutan (Santa Clarita, CA) topped all defensive personnel with 27 digs in the match. Lasell did hold the edge over the visitors with five team blocks as opposed to Emerson's three, four of which were credited to Lasell's junior middle Eileen Barrett (Ludlow, MA).
Lasell spread their defense mainly across four primary passers, each of whom reached double-figures in digs. Freshman outside Taylor Riley (Greencastle, PA) fashioned her sixth double-double of the year, notching 14 digs and adding 10 kills. Meghan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY) produced her seventh double-double with a team-high 19 digs and 26 assists. Danielle Drapeau (Biddeford, ME) and Sarah Eisenberg (Westfield, MA) were the other two Lasers to reach double-figures, with 12 and 18 digs respectively.
In addition to Rutan's defensive showing, Emerson's Kelsey Scanlon (Sonoma, CA), Maddie Breeland (Fairfax, VA), and Jamie Morgan (Maple Glen, PA) all matched with 13 digs apiece. Offensively, Erin Moriarty (Higganum, CT) and Jessica Drumright (San Francisco, CA) did the majority of the work putting down 24 kills between them. Drumright also tallied 24 assists, matched evenly by her opposite setter Katie Bailey (Calabasas, CA).
Lasell's seniors both got into the action during the match. Despite being sidelined for a knee-injury halfway through the season, Costa started the matching serving three straight points for the Lasers on her senior day. Gobeille played in three sets, recording five digs in the process.
On Tuesday, October 19th, Lasell will travel to Roger Williams University for a non-conference match with the Seahawks at 7:00 p.m.
