Major Earns GNAC Defensive Player of the Year Recognition
Newton, Mass.-- Senior libero Amanda Major (Southbury, Conn.) was chosen as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's volleyball Defensive Player of the Year.
Newton, Mass.- Lasell College's Amanda Major was recognized as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Year for the 2009 season. The senior libero from Southbury, Connecticut was awarded the distinct honor for averaging 5.73 digs per set, and accumulating 619 total digs over the course of the season. Major was also awarded GNAC second team All-Conference honors.
This is Major's first time being honored by the GNAC in the post-season awards. Major led the league in digs per set all year long, proving to be one of the top defensive specialists in the conference. The senior captain also produced five 30-plus dig performances this season, including over GNAC rivals Mount Ida, St. Joseph's of Maine, and Suffolk. In addition, Major contributed to the team's success with 15 service aces, 13 kills, and 19 assists this year.
Major has been nationally ranked in the NCAA DIII Statistics for three of the four seasons she has played for the Lasers. This season she is currently ranked 28th nationally in digs per set.
Major finished her four year career with Lasell as the All-Time Leader in Digs for the women's volleyball program. During the 411 sets she played in during that time, she picked up 2,373 total dug balls. Her career average over the four years is 5.77.
Meghan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY) was also recognized by the conference as a member of the GNAC Sportsmanship team. Crozier played in 108 sets this season, distributing 753 assists to her teammates during that time. She averaged 6.97 assists per set throughout the season. Furthermore, Crozier produced 42 service aces and 248 digs over the course of the year.
The sophomore setter was recognized with the Sportsmanship award for her positive disposition and her leadership on and off the court.
