Lasers Fall to the Pride in Season Opener
Springfield, Mass.- Freshman middle hitter Liz Nichols (Southington, Conn.) has an impressive debut for the Lasers but it is not enough as the Pride win 3-0.
Springfield, Mass.- The Lasers opened up the 2009 season at the Springfield College Invitational on Friday night, facing the hosting Pride in their opening match. The Lasers fell in three to the tough Springfield squad in the first round of the tournament.
In the first game of the contest, the Pride came out with a 25-16 victory. Lasell's freshman Liz Nichols (Southington, Conn.) had a great debut in her first collegiate contest. The middle hitter produced a .500 hitting percentage for the Lasers, producing three kills in the set. Senior libero Amanda Major (Southbury, Conn.) also picked up seven digs in the set.
The second game of the match was tough for the Lasers, losing 25-9. However, the Lasers bounced back for a much closer contest, of 25-19, in the third.
Nichols produced another three kills for the Lasers, while her opposite middle, Danielle Drapeau (Biddeford, ME) matched her for three kills of her own.
At the end of the day, Nichols came out of the contest with the highest hitting percentage on the team, at .312, finishing with seven kills. Drapeau finished the day with four kills and added five digs to the mix. Sophomore setter Meghan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY) also added five digs and nine assists, and Major completed the day with 11 digs.
The Lasers face Brandeis and Westfield State in their next two contests at the Springfield Tournament on Saturday, September 5th.
