Womens Volleyball Goes 1-1 at GNAC Tri-Match
Standish, METhe Lasell College Lasers went 1-1 this weekend in a GNAC tri-match with Saint Josephs (Maine) and Emerson College. The Lasers took a five-set match from Emerson on the Monks home court, then lost in a 3-0 battle with the Lions on neutral territory.
Standish, ME-The Lasell College Lasers went 1-1 this weekend in a GNAC tri-match with Saint Joseph's (Maine) and Emerson College. The Lasers took a five-set match from Emerson on the Monks' home court, then lost in a 3-0 battle with the Lions on neutral territory.
Emerson is currently undefeated in the GNAC at 5-0, while St. Joe's (Me.) is even at 3-3. The Lasers have a 3-2 mark currently in the conference, and a 6-10 record overall.
Lasell dropped the first set with the Monks in extra points, 26-24, before coming back for a convincing 25-16 win in the second. The Lasers once again dropped the third set 26-24 before closing the match with the final deciding games in the fourth and fifth, 25-21 and 15-9.
Danielle Drapeau (Biddeford, ME) provided much of the offense with 19 kills in the contest. Drapeau was one of two Lasers to earn a double-double in the St. Joe's match by adding eleven digs to her 19 kills.
Freshman Elizabeth Nichols (Southington, Conn.) had the highest hitting percentage for Lasell, a .224 clip, and left 18 kills on the floor.
Setting up the offense was sophomore Meghan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY). Crozier deposited 43 assists throughout the five sets, averaging 8.6 assists per set. She also put down four aces and picked up 23 digs for the second Lasell double-double.
Amanda Major (Southbury, Conn.) and Melanie Costa (Ludlow, Mass.) combined for an incredible 81 digs. Major picked up the game-best 43 digs, averaging 8.6 per set, and Costa played 37 more attacked balls. Jenna-Lynn Geary (Marion, Mass.) and Lauren Short (Scarsdale, NY) had 23 and 19 digs correspondingly to aid in the Lasers defense.
In the Emerson contest, the Lasers were once again led by Drapeau on offense. The sophomore middle dropped in nine kills. Eileen Barrett (Ludlow, Mass.) and Geary combined for seven more.
Crozier put up 16 assists for the attackers adding 8 digs and Geary and Major scoured the floor all over again to combine for 24 dug balls.
The Lasers are at fifth place in the current standings of the GNAC. Lasell will play two non-conference home matches this week, Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Athletic Center. The Lasers will face Roger Williams and Salve Regina in those contests.
