WLAX: Lasers Use Second-Half Surge to Take Down USJ
West Hartford, CT - The Lasell University women's lacrosse team used a dominant second and third quarter surge to pull away from Saint Joseph (Conn.) for a 15–10 GNAC road victory on Tuesday afternoon. Lasell improves to 3–1 overall and 2–1 in conference play with the win.
Saint Joseph jumped out to an early 3–0 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Lasers quickly responded behind goals from Ruby Cahill and Lily Hunt to cut the deficit to one heading into the second.
The Lasers found their rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring the Blue Jays 6–5 in the frame. Goals from Alice Rourke, Mara Boldy, Emma Dressel, and Emily Watson helped Lasell build momentum, despite Saint Joseph briefly tying the game at 8–8 late in the half.
After Saint Joseph grabbed a 9–8 lead early in the third, the Lasers responded with a five-goal run over the final six minutes of the quarter. Rourke led the charge with three goals during the stretch, while Cahill and Watson also found the back of the net to give Lasell a commanding 13–9 advantage heading into the fourth.
The Lasers maintained control down the stretch, with Zoe Avery and Watson adding fourth-quarter goals to seal the 15–10 victory.
Rourke delivered a career performance, finishing with a game-high five goals, while Watson added three goals and two assists. Cahill contributed two goals and an assist, and Hunt chipped in two goals.
Defensively, Avery made an impact across the field with a team-high four draw controls and three ground balls, while Boldy added three caused turnovers.
In goal, Tia Spenlinhauer was strong in relief, earning the win with seven saves over the final 30 minutes, helping hold Saint Joseph to just two second-half goals.
Up Next: Lasell will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup, a critical GNAC contest against Rivier University this Saturday.
