WLAX: Lasers Fall in Final Seconds in GNAC Battle with Norwich
Newton, MA - The Lasell University women's lacrosse team dropped a narrow 13–12 decision to Norwich University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Saturday morning at Grellier Field.
The Lasers struck first just 26 seconds into the contest when Emily Watson found the back of the net. Norwich responded midway through the quarter to even the score, but Lasell closed the frame strong as Watson added her second goal and Lila Meuse converted a free-position opportunity to give the Lasers a 3–1 lead after one.
Lasell continued to build its advantage in the second quarter. Brianna McNeil opened the scoring off an assist from Watson before Norwich trimmed the deficit with back-to-back goals. The Lasers responded with a pair of man-up goals as Ruby Cahill and Watson connected to push the lead to 6–3. Zoe Avery added another Lasell goal late in the quarter to give the hosts a 7–4 lead heading into halftime.
Norwich surged in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to flip the game's momentum. The Cadets tied the contest at 8–8 before taking a 9–8 lead entering the final period.
Lasell battled back in the fourth quarter, with Lily Hunt, Cahill, and Watson all scoring to regain the lead at 11–10. Norwich answered with a free-position goal to tie the game, but Cahill struck again off an assist from Watson with 5:30 remaining to give Lasell a 12–11 advantage. The Cadets equalized with 3:29 left and ultimately sealed the win with a man-up goal in the final seconds to secure the 13–12 result.
Watson led the Lasers offensively with four goals and two assists, while Cahill added three goals and one assist. Avery, McNeil, Hunt, Meuse, and Mara Boldy each added a goal for Lasell. Defensively, Avery recorded six ground balls and two draw controls, while Boldy collected two ground balls and a draw control. Goalkeeper Joy Sayah made 11 saves in the contest.
Up Next: Lasell will return to action tomorrow evening with a matchup against the Costa Rica National team.
