MIT Shoots Past Women's Lacrosse 12-7

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT junior Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.) netted a game-high four goals, including a trio of strikes late in the first half as the Engineers defeated Lasell College, 12-7, on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium in non-conference women's lacrosse action. With the win, the Cardinal and Gray improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Lasers dip to 1-1.

DiDio opened the scoring at 25:22 of the first half, but Lasell responded with a free position tally by junior Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) at 23.26 that evened the score at 1-1. MIT junior Kira Schott (New Canaan, Conn.), who finished with five points, netted her first of three goals at 20:54, which initiated an 8-0 run. Schott, DiDio, sophomore Hannah Levy (Yardley, Pa.) and freshman Emily Young (La Jolla, Calif.) each located the back of the net once during Tech's run that provided the Cardinal and Gray with a 9-1 advantage with 3:40 remaining in the opening stanza.

Lasell junior Bridget Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) halted the run with her only goal of the contest – a free position goal at 1:53. MIT countered with its final strike of the half as Schott converted on a free position attempt at 1:09, which provided the hosts with a 10-2 lead at the break.

MIT and Lasell swapped goals early in the second half before the Lasers closed the session with a trio of goals during the final 6:21. Pechulis netted her final goal of the contest at 6:21 before seniors Bri Daley (Watertown, Conn.) and Toni Minelli (Newington, Conn.) scored at 1:57 and with eight seconds, respectively. Young located the back of the net twice for Tech during the final 30 minutes, scoring at 20:36 and 12:53.

Lasell senior Alexa Katsigianis (Amherst, N.H.) turned away a season-best 16 shots, while MIT freshman goalie Eva Boal (Princeton Junction, N.J.) deflected three shots, while picking up her second collegiate victory. Tech scooped 31 groundballs and converted nine clears, while the Lasers finished with 17 ground balls and 13 clears. MIT also won the Draws, 13-9, including eight draw control victories by DiDio.

MIT returns to action on Tuesday, March 10 when they host Simmons College at 7:00 p.m. Lasell is back in action on Wednesday, March 11 when they travel to Wellesley College for a 4:00 p.m. start.
