Women's Lacrosse Takes Six All Conference Awards; Eddy Named Coach of the Year

Newton, MA- Marushka Eddy, first year head coach of the Lasell College women's lacrosse team has been named 2009 Coach of the Year by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference after leading the Lasers to their best season record, of 9-7.  Five women's lacrosse athletes join Coach Eddy with All-Conference accolades, including Caitlyn Murphy (Katonah, NY) and Cassandra Haase (Ridgewood, NJ) on the first team, and Kristin Coderre (Monson, Mass.), Christina Canavan (Stonington, Conn.) and Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) on the second team.

A senior attack from Kathonah, New York, Murphy has led the Lasers in goals all year long.  She finished the 2009 season with 71 goals, plus eleven assists, for 82 total points.  Murphy scored four game winning goals, scored three times while down a player, and once while the Lasers were up a player.  She also added 13 ground balls and six draw controls this year.

Murphy was the 2008 co-Player of the Year in the GNAC, and the Rookie of the Year in the NEWLA in 2006. As Murphy's career at Lasell comes to a close, she holds numerous records for the Lasers.  She is second all-time in career goals (242), career assists (46), and career points (288).  Murphy is also tied for 1^st for most goals in a game (11).  Murphy was also honored twice this season as Player of the Week in the GNAC.

Haase has played in over fifty games for Lasell over the past four years.  She has been a staple on the Lasers defense, picking up 105 career groundballs and adding 56 caused turnovers in that time, and holds the career record in both categories. Haase has also contributed 13 points on nine goals and four assists between 2006 and 2009.

This is Canavan's second consecutive year being honored on the second GNAC All-Conference team.  Canavan finished the year second in total goals (46) and tied for first in assists (13).  She had 59 points, added 32 groundballs, and controlled 69 draws, good for first on the team.  As a sophomore, Canavan is already third in all-time career goals, and holds the record for career draw controls (99), most draw controls won in a season (69), and is tied for most draw controls won in a game (9). 

Coderre played in the Lasers net in all sixteen contests this season, leading the Lasers to their best record of 9-7.  During that time, Coderre collected 195 saves in goal, with a 12.01 goals against average.  She holds four Laser records, including most saves in a game (23), most saves in a season (195), most wins in a season (9), and most wins in a career (12).  Coderre was also recognized as Goalkeeper of the Week by the GNAC three times this season, and ECAC Defensive player of the week once.

A first year student, Hessler has made a quick impression on the women's lacrosse team in 2009. Fourth on the team in total points (28), Hessler has score 20 goals and added 8 assists, while also leading the team in groundball pickups with 47.  Hessler is also second to Canavan in winning draw controls this season with 40, and has caused 14 turnovers, second only to Haase on the team.

Hessler also holds a record for Lasell already as a freshman, tied for most assists in a game with four.  Hessler was honored twice this season by the GNAC as Rookie of the Week, and was also a GNAC All-Conference women's soccer player this past Fall.

Coach Eddy was selected by the GNAC coaches for leading the Lasell women's lacrosse team to their best finish ever in the 2009 season, with a 9-7 overall record, and a 4-2 GNAC slate.  The Lasers finished third overall in the league, and made it to the first round of the GNAC tournament.
