WBB: Lasers Defeat Salem State in Overtime Matchup
Newton, MA- The Lasell University womens basketball team delivered a commanding win against Salem State.
Lasell set the tone early by controlling the glass, led by Laura Johnson and Blaize Mack, who combined for key rebounds to create second-chance opportunities. Abigail Duclos knocked down an early three and Erica Lendall added a pair of triples off the bench to spark the offense. Defensively, Daeserae Williamson made an immediate impact with active hands and interior presence. Lasell's rebounding edge helped build a slim advantage, as they closed the opening quarter ahead 19–15.
Salem State responded with a strong second-quarter push, forcing turnovers and converting at the free-throw line. Lasell stayed composed behind Shirle Major, who hit a timely three, and Mack, who attacked the rim. Johnson continued to dominate the paint, pulling down rebounds on both ends, while Teagan Clancy and Alexis Bulson-Cuozzo provided perimeter scoring off the bench. Despite Lasell's continued work on the glass, Salem State edged ahead late, taking a narrow 39–38 lead at halftime.
The third quarter featured tight play and multiple lead changes. Williamson energized Lasell with multiple put-backs, finishing the game with 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block. Mack and Major continued to shoulder the scoring load, and Lasell's defense forced key stops. Still, Salem State closed the quarter strong to carry a 57–54 advantage into the final period.
Lasell battled relentlessly in the fourth, leaning on its interior strength and free-throw shooting. Johnson, who finished with a dominant 24 rebounds and 14 points, was instrumental down the stretch, while Duclos knocked down a clutch late three as part of her 15-point performance. Mack added timely finishes and free throws, ending with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Major chipped in 14 points. Lasell's late surge forced overtime, tied at 73–73 at the end of regulation.
Lasell seized control in overtime with poise on both ends of the floor. Johnson opened the extra period by converting a pair of free throws and continued to anchor the paint, pulling down multiple key rebounds. Major delivered the decisive moment with a clutch three-pointer midway through the period, giving Lasell breathing room. The defense forced turnovers and limited clean looks, while Duclos sealed the victory by knocking down late free throws. Lasell closed overtime on a strong defensive stand to secure the 83–74 win.
