Newton, MA - On Sunday afternoon, the Lasell University softball team hosted the final games of their 2025 season at home versus the Blue Jays of Saint Joseph (Conn.). They would suffer a 7-4 loss in the first game but came back in spectacular fashion in game two with a thrilling 10-9 walk-off win in extra innings.
Game 1
Saint Joseph (Conn.) struck first with an RBI single in the top of the first, but Lasell answered in the second with two runs of their own. Madalen Brown drove in Mackenzie Still with a sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI single from Alyssa Bland to give the Lasers a 2-1 lead. The turning point came in the fourth, when the Blue Jays erupted for five runs on six hits, highlighted by RBI knocks from Sophia Onofrio, Allison Conger, and Jenna Zup, giving them a commanding 6-2 advantage. Emma Carpenter added another RBI in the sixth to stretch the lead to 7-2.
Lasell attempted to rally in the seventh as Bland and Emily Mestas executed a double steal that led to a run, and Katie Hopkins added an RBI single to bring the Lasers within three. However, the comeback fell short. Hopkins led Lasell with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Bland went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Meghan Theall (3-9) took the loss, allowing five earned runs over four innings. Paige Fekete earned the win for Saint Joseph (Conn.), pitching a complete game with eight hits and four earned runs.
Game 2
Saint Joseph (Conn.) struck quickly, plating four runs in the first inning highlighted by a three-run homer from Gabby Marichal. They extended their lead to 5-0 in the second before Lasell mounted its comeback. Lasell stormed back in the third inning with four runs. Mackenzie Still got the Lasers on the board with an RBI double, followed by a two-run triple from Katie Hopkins. A heads-up base-running play allowed Hopkins to steal home and bring Lasell within one.
The Blue Jays added three more runs in the fifth to stretch their lead to 8-4, but Lasell wasn't finished. In the seventh, the Lasers rallied with four runs to tie the game. Abigail Fortin stole home, Still added a sacrifice fly, and Shyanne Raccio launched a two-run homer to left, leveling the game at 8-8. After Saint Joseph took a 9-8 lead in the top of the eighth, Lasell responded once more. A passed ball allowed Madalen Brown to score the tying run, and Fortin followed with a clutch walk-off RBI single to left, scoring Adreanna Ventullo for the win.
Katie Hopkins went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple, while Raccio drove in two and scored once. Fortin earned the win in relief, tossing four strong innings and allowing just one unearned run on one hit.
