MVB: Lasers Triumph in 5-Set Thriller Against MIT
NEWTON, MA – The Lasell men's volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in a thrilling five-set match at the Athletic Center. The victory extends Lasell's strong start to the season, improving their record to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in Great Northeast Conference play.
The match was a back-and-forth affair, with Lasell initially taking the first set 25-21, but MIT responding with a 26-24 win in the second. After dropping the third set 25-21, the Lasell team rallied in the fourth with a dominant 25-17 victory, forcing a decisive fifth set. In the final frame, Lasell sealed the match with a 15-13 win, overcoming a strong effort from MIT.
Lasell's offense was led by sophomore Theo Zaharewicz, who recorded 18 kills and eight digs. Junior Jasper Schultz also contributed significantly, posting 12 kills and six digs. The playmaking was orchestrated by setter Trystan Maloney, who totaled 52 assists and added 12 digs, helping to keep the offense flowing smoothly.
In addition to Zaharewicz and Schultz, senior Dexter Thomas added eight kills, and freshman Carter Phillips contributed three kills and five blocks. The team's defense was also solid, with Maloney's 12 digs and solid efforts from the entire squad.
