Men's Basketball Tops Mount Ida, 74-57

NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell College mens basketball team bounced back from their Wednesday night loss by defeating Mount Ida College 74-57 on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Mount Ida. The Lasers improved to 8-5 on the year and 5-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action while Mount Ida fell to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Jeremy Daniel (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Angel Ortiz (East Lyme, Conn.) each netted 15 points for Lasell while Clyde Niba (Atlanta, Ga.) chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Mount Ida was led by Kenny Jean (Dorchester, Mass.), who recorded 15 points and 9 rebounds, Treace Macklin (Brockton, Mass.) was the only other Mustang in double-figures with 13 points.
Jean started the game with a three-pointer and Mount Ida led 7-4 early on, but layups by Daniel gave the visitors their first leads of the day, and a three-pointer by Richard O'Brien (Manchester, N.H.) put the Lasers in front, 11-10, where they would stay for the final 34:31 of play.
Lasell ran out to a 10 point lead, 27-17 on consecutive three pointers from Niba and Brock Walters (Jacksonville, Fla.) and the Lasers led by as many as 11 in the opening half before the hosts trimmed their lead to 37-31 at intermission.
Clinging to a narrow 51-47 lead with just over ten minutes to play the Lasers used a layup by Ortiz and another three pointer from Walters to start and 11-0 run that opened up the game and they were able to close out the victory from the charity stripe.
Lasell forced Mount Ida into 25 turnovers and came up with 14 steals, while Mount Ida blocked three shots and had an edge on the glass, 40-36.
The Mustangs hit the road Monday along with the woman's team for a GNAC doubleheader at Norwich. The men's game starts at 7:30 pm after the Mustangs' and Cadets' women's teams battle.
Lasell will continue their three-game road swing on Tuesday evening when they travel to Boston for a meeting with Suffolk at 7:00 p.m.
