Men's Hoops Uses 74-60 Win to Close First Semester at 4-4
NEWTON, Mass. (12/10/13) – The Lasell College men's basketball survived a challenge from visiting Wheelock College in non-conference action, 74-60. Lasell improved to 4-4 for the year with the victory while Wheelock dropped to 0-7 on the season.
Clyde Niba (Atlanta, Ga.) had another big day for Lasell, scoring a game-high 22 points and grabbing a career-best 20 rebounds in the contest. Angel Ortiz (East Lyme, Conn.) added 15 points and Brock Walters (Jacksonville, Fla.) came off the bench to net 12 points for the Lasers. Jeremy Daniel (Bridgeport, Conn.) orchestrated the Lasell attack, handing out a game-high 11 assists.
Joe Reedy's (Orlando, Fla.) double-double led the way for Wheelock with 17 points and 15 rebounds and Nicholas Fenton (East Hartford, Conn.) added a double-double of his own with 10 points and 10 rebounds along with six assists.
A close contest in the early going, Wheelock took an 18-16 lead on a pair of baskets by Fenton with just over eight minutes left in the half. Lasell countered with five points apiece from Ortiz and Walters to put together a 10-2 run to take a 26-20 lead with 4:50 remaining in the first period. The two teams struggled to find the range down the stretch and Lasell led 30-22 at the half.
Lasell went in front by 10 on a basket by Niba to open the second half, but Wheelock strung together five straight points, to cut the lead to 32-27. Lasell drilled five three pointers in just over three minutes to build a 12 point edge at 48-36 with 14:06 to play.
Wheelock used a 6-0 run to trim the Lasers lead to 50-44, but Lasell again canned consecutive triples to regain their ten point edge at 58-46. Lasell never let Wheelock closer than ten points the rest of the way at the closed out the 74-60 victory.
Wheelock will close out their first semester schedule with a non-conference game at MIT on Saturday December 14th at 7:00 p.m. Lasell will be off until after the New Year when they resume their season against Keene State on January 7th.
