WORCESTER, MA - Despite a game-best 22-point performance by Lasell's Javon Williams (Mattapan, MA), the Lasers' men's basketball team fell to WPI, 89-63, on Thursday night.
Williams shot five-for-ten from the field and 12-for-13 from the line to lead all scorers while seeing limited time on the court (25 minutes). Junior forward Derrick Harper (Boston, MA) posted 11 points and six rebounds off the bench for Lasell and freshman guard Robert Roy (Dover, NH) and sophomore guard Sean Bertanza (Seymour, CT) lodged nine and eight points respectively. Junior forward Dominik Orlow (Slupsk, Poland) came away with a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.
For the Engineers, Matt Carr (Somersworth, NH) posted a career-best 16 point performance as well as his second career double-double by additionally collecting 10 rebounds. Jeffrey Robinson (Granby, CT) connected on five three-pointers, shooting four-of-five in the second half alone, for a game-total of 21 points. WPI also got a spark from senior Ryan Stock (Grafton, MA), who rattled off five straight points early in the second stanza to thwart a Laser comeback.
WPI never trailed in the game and used a 14-0 run in the first half to turn a 6-6 deadlock into a 20-6 advantage. The Lasers were held scoreless for over nine minutes during that phase, leading to a 35-19 halftime score. Lasell was never able to reduce the deficit to single digits in the second half. WPI enjoyed a 63-27 edge in shots in the paint and transformed a 45-23 advantage on the glass into 24 second chance points.
The win improved WPI's record to 5-1 and left Lasell at 0-5 this year. Lasell returns to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday, December 4th, when they entertain defending champion and preseason favorite Albertus Magnus College, at 3:00 p.m.
