FH: Lasers fall just short against Roger Williams; Taylor scores twice for Lasers

NEWTON, Mass. – The Lasell University field hockey team fell to the Roger Williams University Hawks Wednesday afternoon at rainy Grellier Field in a non-conference match, 3-2.

The loss brings the Lasers to an overall record of 3-7, and the Hawks improve to 6-4.

Senior Sam Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) continued to find the back of the net for the Lasers as she recorded both goals in the loss. Freshman Kaylie Gonya (Uxbridge, Mass.) tallied the only other shot on goal for the home team. Sophomore goalie Sofia Rodriguez (Peabody, Mass.) had herself a busy day in goal with 11 saves.

Roger Williams outshot the Lasers 21-4 with 14 shots on net. Alex Coppinger (Guilderland, N.Y.), Brooklyn Cenatiempo (Trumbull, Conn.), and Lauren Deering (Norwalk, Conn.) all ended with one goal apiece for the Hawks.

The visiting Hawks opened up the scoring six minutes into the first quarter. A penalty corner for the Hawks set up the attack. Coppinger passed to Deering who took a shot and scored in the upper-left side of the goal.

With two minutes left in the first quarter, Lasell answered with a goal of their own. The Lasers defense sent a through ball to Taylor, who put on a series of spin moves to avoid the defenders and fired a back-handed shot passed the Hawks' goalie.

The Lasers struck again in the third when a scramble in front of the net spit the ball out to Taylor who lifted a shot passed the goalie to take a 2-1 lead.

The Hawks settled down quickly and responded with a goal just over two minutes later. A penalty corner from Cenatiempo went straight to Coppinger who launched a shot just inside the circle for a goal.

With just under two minutes remaining in the third, the Hawks found the back of the net for what would be the game-winning goal. Deering found her teammate, Cenatiempo who dodged the Lasers defenders and wound up a shot and scored.

The Lasers will head back to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action against Johnson & Wales on Saturday, October 5 at 1 p.m. The Hawks will also return to conference play in a match-up with Salve Regina on Saturday, October 5 at noon.
