NEWTON, Mass. (9/19/17) – Junior Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) lifted the Lasell field hockey team over Clark University, 1-0, in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon at Grellier Field. With the win, the Lasers improve to 6-0, their best start in program history, while allowing just one goal against in all contests played.
The game-winner came in the 40th minute for Flannery, who scored the game's lone goal in breakaway fashion.
The shot count was dead even on both sides, 16-16, as both teams battled to a scoreless first half. At 30:25, Cougars freshman Chase Collier (Lisbon, Maine) tried to slide one into the Lasers' net, but senior Taylor Falco (Hazlet, N.J.) was there to block the first of several attempts from the Clark offense.
The Lasers opened the second half with back to back corners from Samantha Taylor (Hanover, Mass.), but a strong Clark defense kept Lasell at bay. Taylor wound up for a shot in the 39th minute, as Dani Michaud (Providence, R.I.) came out with the save. As the Cougars tried to convert on the transition, Julia Franzik (Franklin, Mass.) stole the ball and dished it forward to a sprinting Flannery. Flannery used her speed to beat out the Cougar's line of defense, and sent a strike just past Michaud for the 1-0 score.
Following the ice breaker, the non-conference affair became a battle of the keepers, as Michaud denied four straight shots from the Lasers in the 52nd and 53rd minute. Conversely, Landry registered seven of her nine total saves in the final 10 minutes to secure her 12th career shutout.
Landry improves to 6-0 this season with nine saves on the afternoon, while Michaud dips to 2-4 with nine saves as well.
The Lasers return to home non-conference action on Thursday, September 21 for a 4:00 p.m. game against Salve Regina, while the Cougars host Wheaton College in just their second home game thus far on Saturday, with game time set for 11:00 a.m.
