Field Hockey Falls to Salve Regina 4-3 on Late Goal
Salve Regina scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute to lift the Seahawks over the Lasell field hockey team 4-3 on Tuesday evening at Gaudet Field.

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (9/20/16) – Salve Regina scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute to lift the Seahawks over the Lasell field hockey team 4-3 on Tuesday evening at Gaudet Field. The Lasers dip to 6-2 overall while the Seahawks win their third straight game at 6-1.
Erin Gendreau (Sandwich, Mass.) scored with five minutes remaining to break the 3-3 tie for the ultimate game-winner.
Lasell freshman Samantha Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) scored twice for the Lasers, while senior Courtney Braman (Gardner, Mass.) tallied the first goal in the 4th minute.
Gendreau scored three goals overall, while Salve Regina junior Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) made five saves including a sprawling stop in the final seconds to stop a Lasell breakaway.
The Seahawks had surrendered the lead within the first three minutes of the second half when Taylor knocked in her second score of the day for the Lasers. The Seahawks only allowed four shots and two corners in the second half while generating 13 shots of their own with six corners. However, as time ticked down to the final minutes, the Seahawks had not found the back of the net again despite the fact that they were controlling play. Finally, with five minutes remaining, Gendreau found space on the left-wing side and snapped a shot through the legs of goalie Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) to give the Seahawks a 4-3 lead.
The Seahawks effectively played keep away for the final five minutes, however Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) stole the ball at midfield and displayed great speed sneaking by three Salve Regina defenders to get open on the right side with a chance at the net. Severino made a diving save to prevent the equalizer and preserve the Seahawks lead. The Lasers received an untimed corner after the play but could not get a shot on net, ending the game.
Severino improves to 5-1 in the cage for the Seahawks while Landry, who made eight saves falls to 6-2 for the Lasers.
The Lasers will travel to Standish, Maine on Friday for Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action beginning at 3:30 p.m., while the Seahawks host Roger Williams on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. for a league game of their own.
