West Hartford, CT- The Lasell University baseball team dropped a 17-5 decision to Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Sunday afternoon in the GNAC Pod Championship, setting up a winner-take-all rematch between the two teams on Monday.
After Saint Joseph's struck first in the second inning, Lasell answered in the bottom of the third when Tim Callahan delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Tyler McDonald and tie the game at 1-1.
The Monks regained the lead in the fourth with two runs before breaking things open in the fifth. A sacrifice fly and an RBI double set up a three-run home run from Michael Richards as Saint Joseph's built an 8-1 advantage. Saint Joseph's continued to add on in the sixth and seventh innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from Jake Carlisle and a pair of RBI singles that pushed the lead to 14-1.
The Lasers battled back in the eighth inning, loading the bases and scoring four runs. Bobby Long and Declan Silva each drew RBI walks before Callahan came through again with a two-run single to trim the deficit.
The Monks added three more runs in the ninth to secure the win. Callahan finished with three RBI to lead Lasell offensively as the Lasers totaled 10 hits in the contest.
Up Next: With the loss, both teams now sit at 2-1 in the tournament and will face off one final time on Monday afternoon in a winner-take-all GNAC Pod Championship matchup.
