BSB: Lasers Advance to Pod Championship
West Hartford, CT - The Lasell University baseball team powered its way past Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Saturday afternoon, earning an 11-5 victory in the second round of the GNAC Tournament.
After the Monks tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning, the Lasers responded with a massive six-run bottom half that completely shifted the momentum. Declan Silva got things started with an RBI double before Calvin Sanft brought home a run after being hit by a pitch. Jeremy Angeles followed with an RBI single, and Nick Nigro delivered the biggest swing of the inning with a bases-clearing double to right center to put Lasell in front 7-1.
The Lasers kept their foot on the gas in the third as Connor Freitas ripped an RBI double before Sanft added another run-scoring single to extend the lead to 9-1. In the fourth, Tyler McDonald laced an RBI double to make it a nine-run advantage.
Saint Joseph's chipped away with solo home runs in the fifth from Nic Frink and Jared Wilhelm, then added another in the sixth, but Lasell answered right back as Silva drove in another run with a single in the bottom half of the inning to keep control at 11-4.
Silva finished 3-for-6 with two RBI, while Sanft went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Nigro drove in a game-high three runs on two hits, and Freitas scored three times while adding an RBI double. Angeles also reached base three times with two RBI.
On the mound, Chase Supan earned the win after tossing five innings and striking out three, while Benjamin Conlon closed things out with four innings of relief to help send Lasell into the next round of the conference tournament.
Up Next: Lasell will advance to the GNAC Pod Championship on Sunday afternoon and will face the winner of the Saint Joseph's College and Norwich University matchup, which is scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch.
