BB: Lasers Fall in Ninth-Inning Heartbreaker at Mitchell
New London, CT - In a tightly contested matchup Sunday, the Lasell University baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Mitchell College at Alumni Field in New London, Connecticut. With the loss, it concluded the postseason for the Lasers.
The game was a classic pitchers' duel from the outset, with both teams trading scoreless frames through the first four innings. Starter Chase Supan tossed two scoreless innings before turning things over to Zachary Simone for the Lasers. Mitchell broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fifth when Kenneth Miller Jr. delivered an RBI single to center.
Lasell responded, however, in the top of the sixth inning. After CJ Mills led off with a double and Declan Silva laid down a sacrifice bunt, Tim Callahan came through with a clutch RBI single to left to tie the game at 1-1. Callahan finished 2-for-4 with Lasell's lone RBI, while Mills and Scott Lyon also tallied multi-hit performances.
Despite several base runners, the Lasers couldn't capitalize further, stranding eight runners throughout the contest. Mitchell's bullpen held serve, with Chris Gibbs (7-3) earning the win after tossing five innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits while striking out four.
Adam Marsh would come into the game after Simone gave up the run in the fifth, and would throw 3.1 innings of relief with only two hits and also striking out two. In the ninth, Matthew Fletcher would come in with the game tied 1-1 to try and force extra innings. Unfortunately, he ran into trouble after walking the first batter, and after loading up the bases, the Mariners captured the game on a walk-off single.
Despite outhitting Mitchell 9-8, Lasell did suffer three fielding errors, which proved costly in the end result. As the game marks the end of the 2025 campaign for the Lasers, who finish with a 25-16 (11-5 GNAC) standing, the season was full of broken records and accomplishments from a variety of different Lasers. They will lose several seniors and graduate players, but look to reload and continue to be a strong contender in the GNAC next season.
