BB: Lasers Get Insurance Runs Late, Beat Curry 4-1
Milton, MA - The Lasell University baseball team played in a non-conference matchup against the Colonels of Curry College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Laser's pitching staff had a great combined effort as they only allowed five hits and a single earned run in this one. The first Laser run came in the top of the second as they loaded the bases and a HBP on Tyler DiNezza pushed a run across. With the bases loaded and nobody out the Lasers threatened to add more but a double play ended the inning leaving two runners stranded. Fast forward to the fifth inning, the Colonels would tie the game scoring on a wild pitch but the Lasers held it to one run. As the pitching and defense from both sides continued to keep runs from scoring, the Lasers finally broke through again in the eighth inning. Christopher Bulks RBI double drove in Scott Lyon who led off with a walk in the inning, and gave the Lasers back the lead. After Adam Marsh struck out two in the bottom of the 8th, the Lasers looked to add insurance runs in the top of the 9th. Back-to-back doubles from Scott Lyon and Jared Whitby did just that as two more runs came in to score and put the Lasers up 4-1. Matthew Fletcher was then given the ball for the save opportunity and he struck out the side, giving the Lasers the 4-1 victory.
Starter Jeremy Blackwood allowed only five hits and one earned run in his five innings of work but Owen Caldwell would earn the win as he improved to 2-0 on the year. Ty Lohsen and Adam Marsh also added relief innings out of the bullpen as they each struck out one, in one inning pitched. Offensively Scott Lyon had a 1-for-3 effort but his RBI double along with 2 walks and 2 runs scored proved to be critical for the Lasers. Declan Silva would go 3-for-5 and Jared Whitby, Christopher Bulk, and Tyler DiNezza each added RBIs.
Up Next - The Lasers will host their first home game Saturday against the Monks of St. Joseph (ME) at 3:30 at Catholic Memorial High School.
