BB: Lasers Suffer First Loss of Season, Fall to Beacons 10-4
Boston, MA - On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, the Lasell University baseball team travelled into the city to play an out-of-conference game vs the Beacons of UMass Boston.
In the early game, the Lasers were the ones who jumped in front after Pierce Clare got a lead-off double in the top of the second inning and was later able to score on a Jared Whitby popup to make the game 1-0. The third inning saw the Lasers score twice more as CJ Mills' sacrifice fly drove in Christopher Bulk and Scott Lyon's HBP resulted in a run coming across the plate putting the Lasers up 3-0. The Beacons then scored 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, which knocked Lasers starting pitcher Jeremy Blackwood out of the game. The Lasers were able to even the score in the fourth with a Tim Callahan RBI single, but left two runners stranded at the corners. After the Beacons scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, they added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings which gave them a 6-run cushion. Despite the Lasers threatening with several base runners in the later innings, the Beacon bullpen did not allow another Laser score and took a 10-4 victory.
Pierce Clare led the Lasers offensively with a 3-for-5 outing with two doubles and also scoring a run. Tim Callahan and Declan Silva also each had 3-for-5 performances with Callahan adding an RBI and Silva adding a run scored. Starting pitcher Jeremy Blackwood allowed 3 earned runs and struck out four in his 3 innings. Unfortunately, reliever Tim Lohnsen would take the loss on the game after giving up 3 earned runs in his one inning pitched.
Up Next - The Lasers will be playing their next week of baseball in Florida as they will have a variety of different matchups over spring break. Their first game will be played on Sunday in Fort Pierce, FL versus Thiel College from Greenville, PA.
