Johnson Throws Seven Scoreless as Baseball Downs Gordon, 1-0

WENHAM, Mass. (3/30/17) -- One run in the second inning was all the Lasell College baseball team needed for a victory Thursday afternoon as senior Casey Johnson (Windsor, Conn.) pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Lasers to a 1-0 shutout of the Fighting Scots of Gordon College at J. Tec White Field.

The Lasers enter Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 4-7 record on the season after snapping a three-game losing skid, while the Fighting Scots drop to 3-8 with their fifth straight loss.

Johnson completed seven frames for the first time this season in his second victory, allowing just five hits and three walks while striking out two. Classmate Matt Haskell (Wallingford, Conn.) tossed a scoreless eighth before sophomore Daniel Petr (East Haven, Conn.) notched his second collegiate save, working around a ninth-inning hit.

Lasell banged out eight hits in the win, but scored its only run of the game in the second inning as junior designated hitter Jesse Tejero (West Haven, Conn.) hit a two-out double inside the left field line to score senior left fielder Brandon Valentin (Meriden, Conn.) after a walk with one out.

The Lasers put runners on base in all but the first and third frames, including a two-hit eighth. Tejero, graduate right fielder Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.) and sophomore center fielder Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) all went 2-for-4 in the game for Lasell.

Gordon sophomore Connor Rogotzke (Altamont, N.Y.) suffered the tough-luck loss as he allowed just two hits and the one run over his four innings. Sophomore Derek Hudson (Hudson, N.H.) and freshman Garrett Poole (Rindge, N.H.) allowed three hits apiece out of the bullpen but combined for four strikeouts over five innings.

The Lasers return to the field and open their home schedule on Sunday, April 2 for a GNAC doubleheader with Rivier University. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots open Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a pair at Western New England on Saturday, April 1 beginning at noon.
