(Nashua, N.H.) (4/30/16) – The Lasell baseball team played to a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) split with Rivier University on Saturday afternoon at Holman Stadium. Lasell finishes the year at 19-15 and 8-6 overall to earn the No. 3 seed for the postseason tournament, while The Raiders, 11-27 overall, finish the GNAC season at 5-9 and finish as the 6th seed.
Game One: Rivier University 5, Lasell College 3
Lasell was paced by freshman Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) who was 3-for-3 and senior Tyler Flaherty (Portland, Maine) added a 2-for-4 afternoon as the Lasers registered eight hits in the game. Classmate Jake Malone (Harwich, Mass.) took the loss on the hill as he pitched 3.2 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits. Junior Matt Haskell (Wallingford, Conn.) finished up the contest with 2.1 innings of two-hit ball.
Rivier plated three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Senior Taylor Black (West Springfield, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Classmate Jeremy Ball (Swanzey, N.H.) also went 2-for-4 and junior Jacob Rayner (Billerica, Mass.) added a RBI on his 1-for-2 day.
Senior Edward Soucie (South Ryegate, Vt.) pitched 4.2 innings giving up three hits and one run in the victory. Senior Nick Gagnon (Providence, R.I.) recorded his second save after getting the final two outs of the ball game.
Game Two: Lasell College 2, Rivier University 1
With both teams locked into position for the upcoming tournament, the Lasers were able to edge the Raiders, 2-1 on an RBI single by senior Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.) in the sixth inning.
Beckerman finished the game going 2-for-4 and freshman Chris Maringo (Framingville, N.Y.) added a 2-for-3 performance to lead the Lasers. Freshman Justin Webb (San Digeo, Calif.) was credited with the win as he pitched one inning of relief and junior Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) had a 1-2-3 seventh for the save, his third of the season.
Rivier used seven different pitchers in the contest as freshman Kyle Flanagan (Bradford, Mass.) suffered the loss as he allowed the game winning run.
Sophomore Tyler Ferdinand (Middleboro, Mass.) went 1-for-3 and freshman Brandon Thibault (Methuen, Mass.) smacked an RBI double to account for the only Raider run of the contest.
Both teams will meet again on Tuesday, May 3 for the first round of the GNAC postseason tournament. The Lasers will host the single elimination game at Stein Diamond with first pitch slated for 7:00 p.m.
