WALTHAM, Mass. (4/29/16) – Freshman David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and the Lasell College Lasers walked off to a 5-4 victory over Framingham State University Friday evening at Stein Diamond. With the win, the Lasers improve their overall record to 18-14, while the Rams dip to 10-24.
Sophomore Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) and juniors Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass), and Matt Haskell (Wallingford, Conn.) drove home a run a piece for the Lasers, with Haskell crossing home twice in the victory.
Matt Brockett (Guilford, Conn.) and Jon Chapman (Waltham, Mass.) paced the Ram's offensive attack with three hits apiece.
Framingham's freshman pitcher Kyle Hodgsin (Berkley, Mass.) stifled the Lasers' bats early, going six innings with three hits while striking out six batters. Hodgsin was staked to an early two-run lead when Brockett belted a two-out triple and scored on Chapman's double in the top of the third. The Rams would later tack on two more runs off junior reliever John Almeida (North Smithfield, R.I). Freshman Brian Cohen (Rockland, Mass) came on to close the door for Lasers as he and two relievers stumped the Rams from there on out.
The Lasers would get a run back in the bottom of the eighth on a Coscione sac fly, before senior Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn) worked a walk to precede three consecutive base hits that plated the tying runs. Hurty plated home via a Mascolo base knock before freshman Josh Bahnick (Clinton, Mass.) came in as Mascolo's wheels, where he and senior Tyler Flaherty (Portland, Maine) stood at first and second. Haskell swung into an RBI single to pull within one, 4-3, before a failed rundown by the Rams' defense allowed Bahnick to score the 4-4 equalizer. With Haskell in scoring position, Marsell hit a floating single to center field to for the go-ahead ribbie.
Sophomore Thomas Pietruczuk (Norwich, Conn.) (2-0) picked up his second win of the season for Lasell while Aaron Williams (Brockton, Mass) dropped to 0-3 overall.
The Lasers return to action on Saturday, April 30 for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) twinbill at Rivier University at 1:05 p.m., while the Rams will travel to Bridgewater State University for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
