Waltham, Mass. (3/23/16) – The Lasell baseball team cruised to a 17-3 victory over Newbury College on Wednesday evening at the Stein Diamond on the campus of Brandeis University. With their first home win of the season, the Lasers improve to 5-7 overall, while the Nighthawks even out at 8-8 this season.
The montage of scoring was led by senior Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.) who batted 3-for-4 with two doubles and a trio of runs batted in. Classmates Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) and Dan Gagnon (Pomfret, Conn.) along with junior Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Dom Mascolo (Waterbury, Conn.) and freshman Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) each swung into a double in the effort, with each batter driving in a least one ribbie.
For the Nighthawks, junior Ian Hruniak (Lutz, Fla.), senior Ryan Zahornasky (Shelton, Conn.), and sophomores Matthew Peluso (Woodbridge, Ontario) and Garrison Oliver-Jones (Hull, Mass.) each hit into a double a piece, while freshman David Center (Medford, Mass.) and junior C.J. Ingraham (Georgetown, Mass.) recorded an RBI in the deficit.
After three innings, the Lasers led the Nighthawks be a single run, before an 11-run outing in the fourth secured the home-opening victory. The seven-hit, 11-RBI performance was led by senior Hurty, Gagnon and Coscione, who each drove in a pair of runs. Joining Hurty and Coscione in 2B action was Beckerman, who plated home on a bingle by Mascolo.
Sophomore pitcher Josh Bahnick (Clinton, Mass.) kept the Nighthawks runless in the fourth and fifth, allowing just three hits to cap a solid 5.0 innings pitched.
Lasell tacked on a final four runs in the fifth, highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Sherron and Beckerman. The Nighthawks added a single run in the seventh and eighth, but Coscione kept the opposition off base with a final 1-2-3 outing from the hill.
Bahnick (1-1) earned the win on the hill for the Lasers, while sophomore James McGrorry (0-1) suffered the loss on 2.0 innings tossed.
Lasell will return to Stein Diamond on Saturday, March 26 in a doubleheader against Colby-Sawyer at noon, while Newbury hosts Lesley University on Friday, March 25 at 3:30 p.m.
