Baseball Wraps up Florida Trip with 14-3 Loss to Western Connecticut
FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/20/16) – The Lasell baseball team wrapped up their Spring Break trip with a 14-3 loss to Western Connecticut Sunday afternoon at Terry Park. The Lasers will return to Boston with an overall record of 3-7, while the Colonials improve to 4-1.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/20/16) – The Lasell baseball team wrapped up their Spring Break trip with a 14-3 loss to Western Connecticut Sunday afternoon at Terry Park. The Lasers will return to Boston with an overall record of 3-7, while the Colonials improve to 4-1.
Junior Matt Haskell (Wallingford, Conn.) and freshmen Chris Maringo (Framingville, N.Y.) and Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) drove in the trio of runs for Lasell, while classmates Robert Cutone (Tewsbury, Mass.) and Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) added base hits in the effort.
A wide variety of hits for the Colonials was led by senior Chris Callahan (Southington, Conn.) with an RBI triple on a 4-for-4 outing at the plate. Sophomore Bill Buscetto (Old Lyme, Conn.) recorded three ribbies of his own, while he and junior Joe Costa (Hopewell Jct, N.Y.) swung into a double apiece for the win. The Colonials also saw runs batted in from Costa, Matt Greene (New London, Conn.), Frank Vartuli (Westport, Conn.), Zach Sagarv (Trumbull, Conn.), and Ryan Lacey (New Milford, Conn.).
The Colonials packed in 11 runs in the first two innings, highlighted by the Buscetto/Callahan triple and double for five of the seven ribbies. Junior Todd Lyons (Norwalk, Conn.) kept the Lasers scoreless for all seven innings pitched, allowing just two hits and two walks. Lyons recorded a tremendous 14 strikeouts in the win, earning his first W of the season.
Lasell scored all of their runs in the bottom of the eighth, as Cutone worked a bases loaded walk before a Maringo sac fly and RBI single closed out the scoring on the day.
The Lasers will return to Boston for a five-game homestand, starting on Tuesday, March 22 vs. MCLA at 7:00 p.m.
