FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/17/16) – The Lasell baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to North Park University Thursday morning at the Lee County Player Development Contest. The Vikings grab their third W of the season at 3-7, while the Lasers sink to 2-5 overall.
Freshmen Brett Sherron (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and Chris Maringo (Framingville, N.Y.) drove in the pair of runs for the Lasers, with Sherron posting a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Senior Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) batted 2-3 to join freshman David Marsell (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) in crossing home in the effort.
For the Vikings, Mitchell Jordan swung into an RBI triple to lead the victor's attack, while Anthony Dinardo and Anthony Bragg drove in the remaining two runs.
After an opening inning of scoreless baseball, Hurty and Sherron did their job at the plate in the second side before Maringo stepped up to bat. Maringo swung into a deep single to left, bringing in a speedy Hurty from second base for the 1-0 bump.
Senior pitcher Jake Malone (Harwich, Mass.) kept the Vikings at bay with two scoreless innings pitched with just a single hit, before a bases loaded triple by Jordan lifted North Park to a 3-1 advantage in the fourth. Mitchell was then plated by a Bragg single to wrap up the four-hit, four-run outing for the Vikes.
In the top of the sixth with runners on first and second, Sherron swung into another base hit, plating Marsell to trail North Park by just two, 4-2.
Cekus stepped up to bat with one down in the bottom of the 8th and worked his way over to third on a deep triple to left center. A Dinardo knock to center field drove in Cekus on the play, ensuring the 5-2 final in the contest.
Despite a solid showing on the mound, Malone (0-1) suffered the loss on four earned runs in six innings pitched, while junior John Almeida (North Smithfield, R.I.) gave up one run and two hits in 1.2 innings of relief. Mario Creecy (1-1) notched the win for the Vikings in seven innings pitched, allowing two hits and two earned runs.
