PROVIDENCE, R.I. (4/4/15)- The Lasell College baseball teamed earned a 1-1 split to Johnson and Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) twinbill on Saturday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex. The split puts the Lasers at 5-11 on the year and 1-3 in the GNAC, while the Wildcats progess to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Wildcats senior Shawn Haugh (Tampa, Fla.) (2-1) threw six innings of shutout ball that kept Lasell scoreless for the first six innings and allowed an unearned run in the seventh in JWU's 8-1 win in the nightcap. The Lasers took advantage of winds that gusted over 50 miles per hour and rode senior Greg Sherman's (Marshfield, Mass.) complete-game to a 4-2 victory in the opener.
Johnson & Wales broke a scoreless game open with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth. Ryan Cabral (So., Hope, R.I.) plated Carlos Sanabria (So., Pawtucket, R.I.) with a single to right field for the game's first run in the fourth. In the fifth, Tom Elkow (Jr., Morgantown, N.J.)lofted a one-out single to center, and later scored on a single by Jordan Pilarski (Jr., Garnet Valley, Pa.). Brad McParlin (Jr., Pawtucket, R.I.) reached on an error and scored on a Sanabria sacrifice.
In the sixth, Ivan Reyes (Fr., Cranston, R.I.) led off with a double and scored on a single by catcher Ty Karalis (Jr., Pawtucket, R.I.). Karalis later scored a single by former Bishop Hendricken shortstop Lou Umberto (Cranston, R.I.). Umberto then scored on one of three misplayed pickoff attempts by Lasell. Sanabria and Andrew Hunton (Jr., Monroe, N.Y.) were to score on the other two failed pickoffs an inning later.
Hunton, Karalis, and Elkow each had two hits for the Wildcats, who had 12 in the nightcap.
With the winds swirling off Narragansett Bay in the opener, Lasell took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on RBI fly balls off the bats of Kevin Post (Sr., Cromwell, Conn.) and shortstop Jesse Tejero (Fr., West Haven, Conn.). Post, who had three hits in the opener, later scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth when Evan Muzingo (Sr., Brookfield, Conn.) walked with the bases loaded. A.J. MacKenzie (Sr., Pasadena, Md.) laid down a perfect bunt to score junior Tyler Flaherty (Portland, Maine) later in the fourth for the final run.
Sherman, who was aided by Flaherty at third on numerous occasions throughout the game, and by a sparkling catch by Skylar Beckerman (Jr., Pensacola, Fla.) in the fifth inning, earned his second win of the season, striking out three. Jake Marchessault, the Wildcat junior from Chariho High School in Wood River Junction, RI, was the hard-luck loser. Marchessault struck out six and walked two, one intentionally, for JWU.
The Lasers' schedule is tentative due to weather and field conditions, while Johnson & Wales resumes conference play on Monday when they host Rivier University for two games starting at 5:00 p.m.
