Providence, R.I. (4/6/14) – The Lasell College baseball team split a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference games at Johnson and Wales University. Johnson and Wales clipped Lasell, 2-1 in the opening game of the doubleheader but Lasell bounced back with a 3-2 victory in the second game. The Lasers moved their record to 8-9 overall and 3-3 in GNAC games, while Johnson and Wales stands at 18-6 and 3-2 in league games.
Game One – Johnson and Wales 2 – Lasell 1
Chris Pittman doubled and scored a run for Lasell, Wes Hurty and Rob Madden each singled as the Lasers were limited to one run on three hits in the game. Madden put together a strong performance on the mound, taking the loss despite going six and two-third innings and allowing only two runs, one earned while limiting Johnson and Wales to three hits.
Lasell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Pittman doubled with one out, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came in to score on an RBI groundout by Kevin Post. Madden held the Wildcats without a hit until the sixth inning when the hosts tied the game on a two-out single to make it 1-1.
The Wildcats opened the seventh with a lead-off single by Sanabria, but Madden showed signs of getting out of the inning unscathed when he retired the next two batters. Sanabria advanced to second on a wild pitch, then coming in to score on a single by Hocking to take the first game 2-1.
Game Two – Lasell 3 – Johnson and Wales 2
Dan Gagnon singled three times for Lasell, scoring a run and Chris Pittman singled and tripled driving in a run and Wes Hurty singled, scored once and knocked in a run. Gary Trottier started and took the win on the mound, allowing one run on four hits in four innings of work while striking out a pair before giving way to Ryan Bowen who yielded one unearned run on three hits in two innings on the mound. Greg Sherman threw a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save for Lasell.
Johnson and Wales opened the bottom of the first with a run-scoring single by Elkow to take a 1-0 lead. Lasell came back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, using a single by Gagnon to start the rally and gaining a second base runner when Wes Hurty reached on an error. Pittman's triple knocked in both runners to give Lasell a 2-1 lead. The Lasers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning on Hurty's RBI single, making it a 3-1 game.
JWU added one run in the bottom of the sixth inning but Sherman shut down the hosts to help Lasell claim the victory.
