Becker Clips Lasell in Non-Conference Baseball Tilt
The Hawks pulled out an 8-4 non-conference victory on Tuesday afternoon.
Leicester, Mass. (4/16/13) – Becker College defeated Lasell College 8-4 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Rochdale Park. The win lifts the Hawks to 4-20, while the Lasers fall to 11-15.
The Hawks got on the board in the top of the first when Mike Marcello (West Haven, Conn.) grounded out to the right side of the infield, scoring Todd Tompkins (West Haven, Conn.) from third base.
The Lasers tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Evan Mozingo (Brookfield, Conn.) grounded out to second base, allowing Bobby Ellard (Medfield, Mass.) to scamper home from third.
Becker would regain the lead in the top of the third when Marcello doubled to right field, scoring Mike Smith (Warner, N.H.) from first, lifting the Hawks to a 2-1 advantage.
Becker padded their leading in the top of the fifth when they plated four more runs. With the bases filled with Hawks, Tom Natoli (Suffern, N.Y.) singled up the middle, scoring Todd Tompkins and Eric Lajoie (Barre, Mass.). After a wild pitch allowed Mike Smith to score the Hawks fifth run of the game, Nick Lemay (Oxford, Mass.) capped off the inning with an RBI triple down the right field line, putting the Hawks in front 6-1.
The Lasers cut the deficit in half when they score two runs in the bottom of the seventh. After Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.) got hit by pitch and Rob Madden (Hingham, Mass.) singled to right, Dustin Brown (Falmouth, Mass.) followed with a double down the right field line, scoring Uberti. Bobby Stachura (Middletown, Conn.) brought home Madden when he grounded out to short, making the score 6-3.
The Hawks put two insurance runs on the board in the in the top of the eighth on a Todd Tompkins sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Mike Smith. The Lasers made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth when they scored a run on an RBI single by Dustin Brown, but Chris O'Rourke (Mendon, Mass.) got Bobby Ellard to ground out with the bases loaded, preserving the 8-4 win for the Hawks.
Becker senior hurler Mike Schoen (Yorktown, N.Y.) earned the win after pitching six innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Chris O'Rourke earned his first collegiate save after pitching the final three innings. The Hawks return to action tomorrow evening when they play WPI at 7:00 p.m. at Rochdale Park.
Freshman Jake Malone (Harwich, Mass.) took the loss after tossing four and a third innings, allowing six runs on five hits. The Lasers get back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Norwich University for a GNAC doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
