Buzzards Bay, MA - The Lasell College baseball team traveled to Commodore Hendy Field in Buzzards Bay, MA on Sunday afternoon and left splitting a double header against the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Lasers captured a thrilling 7-6 victory in game one of the twin bill. The Buccaneers came back in game two to shutout Lasell by a score of 5-0.
Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, MA) gave the Lasers a 1-0 lead after smacking a two out RBI double to right field. Lasell would score two runs in the top of the third, as well as the top of the fourth courtesy of contributions from Bobby Stachura (Middletown, CT) and Matt Mahoney (Rockland, MA), both of whom connected with RBI singles. After four innings of play, Lasell held a 4-0 advantage.
Massachusetts Maritime Academy tallied six total runs over the next two frames to jump in front by a score of 6-5. Bob Lee (Braintree, MA), Zacary Cooney (East Bridgewater, MA), and Ben Maher (Plymouth, MA) each chipped in with RBI's in that span.
In the last inning Billy Uberti (Newton, MA) struck an RBI single to center field scoring Cavanagh to even the game up at 6-6. With two outs, Corey Michel (Rochester, NH) laced an RBI triple on the first pitch he saw, scoring Uberti and giving Lasell a 7-6 advantage.
Mahoney, Stachura, Cavanagh, Uberti, and Michel all registered two hits apiece in an 11 hit affair Lasell.
Dan O'Boyle (Bayport, NY) came on to close out the game for the Lasers. O'Boyle retired the side in the bottom of the seventh earning his first save of the season and securing Lasell's fifth victory in a row.
Christopher Pittman (Brockton, MA), 1-0, earned the win in game one pitching one-third of an inning and retiring the only batter he faced.
Lasell starting pitcher Brendan Jordan (Rocky Hill, CT) recorded the no decision in game one after pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits.
Cooney (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in his only inning of work.
Game two was not nearly as thrilling for Lasell as game one was. The Lasers were handed a 5-0 loss to the Buccaneers in the second game of the afternoon.
Massachusetts Maritime Academy quickly took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Maher. The Buccaneers didn't look back, as they scored three runs in the third and one additional run in the fourth to increase the lead to 5-0. Lee, Maher, and Matt Pelletier (Bradford, MA) each pitched in with RBI's in the game.
Lasell was unable to muster anything together game two's 5-0 defeat, only tallying four hits and leaving eight men on base.
O'Boyle (1-2) took the loss in the second game for Lasell, pitching two innings and surrendering four runs on six hits.
Thomas Notarangelo (Foxboro, MA), 1-0, registered his first win of the season, allowing only two hits in four shutout innings.
Jared Lowe (Brimfield, MA) recorded his first save of the year in three shutout innings of work, while striking out four Lasell hitters.
The split brings the Lasers' overall record to 5-11, while the Buccaneers now stand at a record of 6-4 on the season.
Lasell will host Framingham State University on Tuesday night in a 7 p.m. start at Stein Diamond on the campus of Brandeis University.
