Waltham, MA – In a back and forth affair, the Lasell College baseball team walked off with a 6-5 victory in its home opener over Newbury College Wednesday night at Stein Diamond in Waltham, MA. Matt Mahoney (Rockland, MA) struck a two out RBI single to right field scoring Corey Michel (Rochester, NH) to earn Lasell its second consecutive victory.
Newbury took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second inning after Alex Chetelat (Farmington, CT) led off the inning with a double, and later scored when Chris Murphy (Griswold, CT) reached base on a Laser error.
In the fourth inning, the Nighthawks increased the lead to 2-0 on a Murphy RBI single which drove home Chetelat. However, Lasell was able to tack on two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to even the game at 2-2. Bobby Stachura (Middletown, CT) and Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, MA) led off the bottom of the fourth each recording singles. Stachura then scored on an RBI groundout by Billy Uberti (Newton, MA), while Cavanagh crossed the plate on a Cory Mitchell (Rockland, MA) RBI single.
The Nighthawks grabbed a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning when Steven Broy (Gorham, ME) and Patrick Curry (Hampstead, NH) both recorded RBI triples. The Lasers would make it a one run game at 5-4 in the bottom half of the fifth on a two run single by Cavanagh, which scored Mahoney and Joshua Sullivan (Rockland, MA).
Sullivan tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning when he smacked an RBI double to keep Lasell's hopes alive.
Greg Sherman (Marshfield, MA) allowed one hit over the final two innings in relief of Lasell starting pitcher Matti Doxter (Somersworth, NH) who registered the no decision after throwing four innings while allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Lasers cashed in on being the last to bat. With two outs Michel reached on an error and advanced to second after Sullivan worked a walk. Mahoney stepped up to the plate and ripped an RBI single to walk-off with a 6-5 victory.
Sherman (1-0) notched his first victory of the season, going five innings in relief and allowing one run on only two hits while striking out four.
Chetelat (2-1) suffered the loss while pitching two and two-thirds innings allowing one run (zero earned) on two hits and striking out three.
The Lasers record improves to 2-10 on the season while the Nighthawks drop to 8-7 overall.
Lasell travels Saturday to the Joseph Zavattaro Athletic Complex in North Adams, MA to face the Trailblazers of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in double header action beginning at 12:00 p.m.
