Waltham, MA - With two complete game shutouts from their starting pitchers, the Lasers took both games of the doubleheader against Norwich University, 13-0 in game one and 8-0 in game two.
In game one the Lasers jumped ahead early in the top of the first off Norwich starter Austin Shaw(Yarmouth, ME), scoring five runs on four Norwich errors. That was followed by Lasell starter Eric Howard (Newton, MA) striking out the side in the bottom of the inning, setting the tone for the remainder of the game.
The Lasers would strike again in the top of the fourth when with two outs Mike Mahoney (Rockland, MA) drove one to the left centerfield gap. The left fielder and center fielder collided and the ball rolled to the wall. Mahoney would come all the way around for an inside the park home run, stretching the lead to 6-0.
In the top of the fifth Lasell would break it open. They would put up six runs on five hits, the big swing coming off the bat of Billy Uberti (Newton, MA). After a Chris Pittman (Brockton, MA) double down the left field line, Uberti drilled an opposite field home run, his first of the season.
The Lasers would add another off the bat of Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, MA). After hits by Corey Michel (Rochester, NH) and John Sartucci (Weymouth, MA), Lentini singled up the middle bringing around Michel.
Howard went seven shutout innings, giving up just three hits while striking out 12.
Game two featured another great outing from a Laser starter, this one from Uberti. With Cadet's starter Conar Mahon (Hopkinton, MA) also pitching well early on, the game went scoreless into the fifth.
That's when the Laser bats would wake up. With the bases loaded after hits by Josh Sullivan (Rockland, MA) and Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, MA), Lentini broke the tie with another single up the middle, this time driving in two.
In the sixth the Lasers would double their lead. After back to back hits by left fielder Sean Ruderman (Pittsfield, MA) and third baseman Bobby Stachura (Middletown, CT), center fielder Andrew Pompeo(Hingham, MA) drove in Ruderman with a base hit to right field. Stachura would score on a Cavanagh ground out, stretching the lead to 4-0.
With Uberti still pitching strong into the seventh, the Lasers would put this one out of reach with four more runs on RBI's from Stachura, Pompeo, and Cavanagh, making the score 8-0.
Lentini and Cavanagh each tallied three RBI's for Lasell.
Uberti would go all seven innings, not allowing a run, while striking out seven and getting the win.
Mahon would take the loss for the Cadet's, going 6.1 innings, allowing 8 earned on 14 hits.
The Lasers advance to 13-10 on the season, 2-4 in conference, and will take on conference opponent Albertus Magnus in New Haven, CT.
