Standish, Maine - The Lasers dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball games to the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday at Larry Mahaney Diamond in Standish, Maine. Lasell was held scoreless, 4-0, in game one and was outscored 6-2 in game two.
In game one the Monks quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the home-half of the first inning on an RBI single by Todd Keneborus (Hollis Center, ME) and sacrifice fly by Ian Lee (Hampden, ME). The two runs scored in the first inning proved to be all Saint Joseph's needed to secure the victory.
Lasell's Joshua Sullivan (Rockland, MA) and Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, MA) had the only two hits for the Lasers in game one. Sullivan's single came with one out in the top of the fourth inning. The Lasers final hit of game one came on a Cavanagh single up the middle in the top of the seventh. The Lasers were unable to capitalize after getting the lead runner on and dropped game one.
Lasell starter Michael Rodriguez (Brockton, MA) pitched a complete game for the Lasers. Rodriguez pitched six innings giving up seven hits and four earned runs, while only yielding one walk and striking out four.
Saint Joseph's sophomore pitcher Chad Rafferty (Keene, NH) picked up the win for the Monks. Rafferty hurled five innings of one hit baseball, striking out seven Laser hitters.
In game two the Monks matched their offensive output from game one in the bottom of the first inning. Nate Martin (Chebeague Island, ME) led off the inning with an infield single and scored on an Alex Lornec (Nanuet, NY) double to right-center field giving the Monks a 1-0 lead. Saint Joseph's would go on to score three more runs in the inning and tally four runs on five hits.
Lasell would cut the deficit to 4-1 in the top of the second inning after Pittman doubled to left-center field and scored on a Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, MA) groundout to first base.
The Monks went on to add to their lead by scoring one run each in the bottom of the second and fourth innings. Lasell cut into the Monks 6-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning when Sullivan scored on a ground out to the shortstop by Jacob Salkovitz (Brockton, MA) to make it a 6-2 ball game. This would prove to be the final run scored in the game as Saint Joseph's went on to win 6-2.
Saint Joseph's two wins put them with an 11-7 record, and undefeated in GNAC play with a 2-0 record in the conference. The Lasers fall to 0-4 in GNAC competition and level out at 10-10 overall.
Lasell will take the field on Thursday, April 7th at 7:00 p.m. hosting New England College at Stein Diamond on the campus of Brandeis University.
