Rams Thwart Lasell Baseball
Waltham, MA-- Suffolk University derailed the Lasell College baseball team in back-to-back Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games on Sunday afternoon, taking the first contest 13-4 and coming from behind to steal a 12-8 victory in the second. Lasell carried a 6-3 lead through the sixth inning before the Rams used a nine-run seventh to abscond the win in game two.
Waltham, MA-- Suffolk University derailed the Lasell College baseball team in back-to-back Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games on Sunday afternoon, taking the first contest 13-4 and coming from behind to steal a 12-8 victory in the second. Lasell carried a 6-3 lead through the sixth inning before the Rams used a nine-run seventh to abscond the win in game two.
The Rams built up a 7-1 lead by the fourth inning of game one. Two runs by the Lasers in the bottom of the fifth were cancelled out by two Ram scores in the top of the sixth. The Rams tacked on four additional runs in the seventh to culminate in the 13-4 triumph.
Lasell’s right fielder Mike Mahoney (Rockland, MA) went 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Freshman third baseman Bobby Stachura (Middletown, CT) added a hit and two RBI, with one putout and two assists in the field. Conor Cavanaugh (Quincy, MA) and Jake Salkovitz (Brockton, MA) chipped in with one hit and one run apiece and James O’Neil (San Diego, CA) and Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, MA) knocked one hit each, Lentini grabbing an additional RBI.
Rookie starter Ryan Welch (Colorado Springs, CO) struck out three Rams in six innings and endured the loss to Suffolk, the current league leaders in the GNAC standings.
The second game was a different story from the start as Lasell went up 2-0 in the second inning and further turned out a 6-1 lead in the fourth. Mike Rodriguez (Brockton, MA) started on the mound for Lasell, fanning three batters in four innings, allowing just one earned run and five hits.
Despite two more Suffolk runs in the fifth, Lasell clung onto their 6-3 edge through the seventh inning, at which point Suffolk dug in for seven hits and nine runs to take the lead, 12-6. Salkovitz and Joseph Reggiannini (Quincy, MA) scored runs for Lasell in the bottom of the frame but it was not enough to pull out the win.
A handful of Lasers had multiple hits in game two. Mike Mahoney went 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI, including one double and Matt Mahoney (Rockland, MA) went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Joshua Sullivan (Rockland, MA), Angelo Colucci (Stoneham, MA), and Salkovitz each roped two hits each, with Sullivan and Colucci earning two RBI and Salkovitz scoring two runs.
Lasell is now 3-17 overall, while holding a 3-7 conference slate. On April 15th, Lasell will travel to Becker College for a non-conference clash with with the Hawks. First pitch will be thrown at 7:00 p.m.
