Waltham, MA-- The Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers used just five hits to compose a 3-0 shutout of the Lasell College baseball team on Wednesday afternoon at Brandeis University's Stein Diamond. Despite a valiant effort by sophomore pitcher Matt Mahoney (Rockland, MA) striking out five Buccaneers while permitting just four hits in eight innings, the Lasers offense was shut down by Maritime.
Mahoney retired a batter an inning, while the Lasers defense collected the remaining outs through three scoreless frames. Maritime (7-13) went ahead 2-0 when a lead-off single in the fourth by Maritime’s Andrew Saari (Framingham, MA) set up Greg Wiggin (Marshfield, MA) to unleash a two-run homer over the left center field wall.
Wiggin would tally his third RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly into center field in the eighth to cap the Buccaneers’ scoring. Maritime’s first three batters reached to load the bases. Kyle Armstrong (Whitman, MA) would come home on Wiggin’s sacrifice hit, but a groundout double-play by Lasell’s short stop Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, MA) and first baseman Patrick Girard (Stonington, CT) ended the inning without further damage on the 3-0 margin.
The Laser left seven runners on base through the nine innings. Jake Salkovitz (Brockton, MA), Josh Sullivan (Rockland, MA), Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, MA), and Lentini recorded the Lasers only hits. Randy Weiner (Randolph, MA) sat down one Maritime batter on strikes during one inning of relief.
Saari was the only Buccaneer to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with one run. Louis Ottino III (Plymouth, MA) tossed a complete game while holding the Lasers off the board. Ottino struck out eight en route to the shut out victory.
Lasell (5-22) hits the road on Thursday, April 22nd for a 3:30 p.m. regional, non-conference game against New England College.
