East Providence, R.I. – Lasell College split a pair of
Great Northeast Athletic Conference games on Sunday with Johnson
& Wales University. The Lasers won the first game 7-3
with sophomore hurler Josh Sullivan (Rockland, MA) on the mound,
and then dropped game two of the twin bill, 5-2.
Johnson & Wales went ahead 3-0 in the first three innings of the first game before Herb Chappell (Salem, CT) notched a three-run homer to tie the game up at three-all in the top of the fourth. Lasell added on four more runs in the following two innings. Mike Mahoney (Rockland, MA) plated Matt Mahoney (Rockland, MA) on a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Conor Cavanaugh (Quincy, MA) earned a RBI in the fifth on a single to left field. Cavanaugh went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
In addition to striking out eight Wildcats and allowing just one earned run in the victory, Sullivan also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs for Lasell.
In the nightcap, Lasell produced the first run in the top of the second inning when Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, Mass.) hit an RBI groundout, scoring Cavanaugh. A two-run homer in the bottom of the third by Johnson & Wales switched control of the board, but a run by Cavanaugh in the fourth knotted the score. Three unanswered tallies in the bottom of the fifth by the hosts capped the game in the Wildcats advantage.
Chappell, Lentini, and Matt Mahoney each notched a hit for the Lasers in game two. Ryan Welch (Colorado Springs, CO) suffered the defeat in six innings of work, fanning three batters along the way.
Lasell has a grueling five day stretch of games ahead of them, beginning with non-conference Bates College on Monday, April 19th at 8:00 p.m. at Brandeis University.
