The Lasell College baseball team may be in its first year as an NCAA varsity sport, but they are already gaining recognition for the Lasers, winning outright in their first tournament for the 2008 Fall season.
The Lasers traveled to New Hampshire Technical Institute on October 11th for the NHTI Fall Invitational, first taking on Vermont Tech in game one, and then the hosts in the second round. Four total teams competed in the one day tournament; NHTI, Hesser, Vermont Tech, and Lasell.
In the first round, Lasell got a combined no-hitter from freshman Mike Mahoney (Rockland, MA), sophomore Scott Janz (Woodridge, NJ), and freshman Randy Weiner (Randolph, MA). The Lasers beat Vermont Tech 5-0.
Game two proved to be just as exciting for the Lasers, with Pat Girard (Pawtucket, CT) and Herb Chappell (Salem, CT) each generating two run homers. Pitchers Josh Sullivan (Rockland, MA), Mitch Wagenbach (Chatham, MA), and Deon Bragg (Hyde Park, MA) were excellent on the mound for Lasell, and the Lasers won 6-2 over NHTI.
Chappell was named Most Valuable Player in the tournament and Wagenbach was selected as the Outstanding Pitcher.
