Waltham, Mass.- The Lasell College baseball season came to an end Tuesday evening with a 5-3 loss to the Framingham State Rams. The Lasers attempted a late comeback in the final innings of the contest, but the Rams held on for their 11th win of the season.
Steven Tramontozzi (Watertown, Mass.) hit a home run just seven pitches into the contest to put Framingham State up 1-0 in the first inning. However, sophomore pitcher Rich Balgowan (Hamilton, NJ) struck out the following two Rams for Lasell on the mound to end the inning.
In the third inning, the Rams added to their lead as their leadoff batter Marc Massarotti (Watertown, Ma) hit the second home run of the game just over the left field fence bringing the score to 2-0. The third Ram tally was set up by Joe Sheehan (Burlington, Ma) who sent Dave Leach (Chelmsford, Mass.) home as he grounded into a double play, allowing Leach to score on the throw.
Framingham scored again in the fourth with Leach earning the RBI and Sean Callahan-Montague (Watertown, Mass.) coming around home, and again in the 7th when Tramontozzi scored on a wild pitch.
Lasell got within striking distance of the Rams when Calrton Lentini (Wilmington, Mass.) hit a fly ball to left field leading off the eighth inning for the Lasers followed by Jim Amon (Warren, NJ) hitting a two run bomb over the left field fence close the gap to 5-2.
With bases loaded and two outs in the top of the 9th inning Chris Cole (Lynn, Ma) hit a fly to Lasell's centerfielder Sean Ruderman (Pittsfield, Mass.) ending the inning for the Rams.
Junior Veiga (Randolph, Mass.) singled and Mike Grenier (Fitchburg, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to get on base with no outs for Lasell during their final chance at bat. After Framingham put two Lasers away, Lentini hit a line drive past the Rams short stop to bring home Veiga from third and push the Lasers' score to 5-3. The Lasers were unable to score further as Josue Almodovar (Holyoke, Mass.) got the save with the final out for Framingham.
Bart Venza (East Rockway, NY) earned the win, striking out in seven batters in eight innings.
