Lasers' Updates 11/05/2008
Women's Soccer
The Lasers played a thrilling game last week against Johnson & Wales University. This game marked the final regular season matchup for Lasell and ended in a double overtime victory for the Lasers, with just 28 seconds left to play.
Liz McGeoy (Doylestown, PA) scored two goals in regulation to lead the Lasers into overtime. McGeoy's first goal was a header assisted by Jordynn Frollo (Uxbridge, MA), and her second goal was fed to her by Alexi Giatrelis (Mashpee, MA).
Kaitlyn Fields (Stoneham, MA) scored the game winning goal with 28 seconds left in the second overtime. Olivia Tsakiris (Grosvenordale, CT) fed the ball to Fields who took a long, hard shot and scored to end the game. With that win, the Lasers secured a 6th place finish in the GNAC and the sixth seed in the GNAC tournament.
Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, MA) made some fantastic saves in net for the Lasers against the Wildcats, and finished the day with 11 stops.
The Lasers were seeded against third seeded Emmanuel College in the quarter finals of the GNAC women's soccer tournament. Alyssa Ferreri (Southbury, CT) headed in a long cross form Ashley Lambert (Salem, MA) to pull ahead of the hosting Saints in the first half.
Lasell held onto that lead for the remainder of the half, due in large part to the play of senior goalkeeper Jamie Remmers (West Islip, NY). Remmers had 10 saves in the first half, including an impressive penalty kick save.
After the half, the Saints came out on a run, scoring three consecutive times. Lasell finished their season with a 10-5-2 overall record.
McGeoy, Remmers, and Fields were all chosen to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll this week for their fine performances in these two games.
The Lasers still have a shot at making the ECAC post season tournament. ECAC pairings will be announced on Nov. 10th.
Cross Country
The Men's and Women's Cross Country team competed in the GNAC Championship on Saturday, hosted by Saint Joseph's College (Me.). Lasell's men's team took fourth place in the meet and the women's team took fifth place.
For the first time this season, David Walsh (Springfield, MA) was the first Laser to cross the finish line of the 8k race. Walsh finished in 30:21 and at 18th place. Zachary Lambert (Marlborough, MA) was the second Lasell runner to end the race, finishing in 19th, just one second after Walsh, at 30:22.
Coming in 22nd and 23rd place were Kristopher McCabe (Kingston, NY) and Christopher Johnson (Gloucester, MA). Completing the Lasers scoring were Grant Vantine (Fitchburg, MA) and Mike Isherwood (Warwick, RI). McCabe ran a 30:35, and Johnson finished at 30:37. Vantine and Isherwood finished at 33:23 and 37:58 respectively.

The Lasers will have a week off before they compete in the NCAA Regional at Williams College on Saturday, November 15th.
Field Hockey
Lasell's field hockey team finished their season this week, after a quarter final appearance in the NAC tournament.
The Lasers played in the quarter finals against the fourth seeded Husson College Eagles. The Lasers were held scoreless by the Eagles, but they did have offensive attempts by Caitlyn Walker (Middlebury, CT), Meagan DeAndrade (New Bedford, MA), and Tia Pratt (S. Paris, ME).
Christine Thornton (Canton, MA) finished the game with 7 saves, and Amanda Miller (Fall River, MA) made 2 stops for Lasell.
The Lasers followed this game with their final game of the season, played at Framingham State College. Walker and Amy Lentini (Wilmington, MA) kept the Ram's keeper busy in goal, but they were unable to score and the Rams pulled out a 4-0 victory.
Thornton made 12 stops in net for the Lasers, under constant Ram pressure, and Cara Hulse (Danbury, CT) picked up her fifth defensive save of the season.
The Lasers finished their season at 7-11.
Women's Volleyball
The Lasers women's volleyball team had five matches this week, finishing their regular season, and making a trip to the GNAC quarter finals.
The ladies opened the week against Pine Manor College and swept them in three straight sets. Melanie Costa (Ludlow, MA) went on a seven point service run in the first set to take an early lead, the Lasers won the set by 10.
The Gators fought back in the second game, and forced the set into extra points, but the Lasers came out victorious, at 26-24. The final set was just as close, with the Lasers picking up the win by two at 25-23.
Amanda Major (Southbury, CT) finished the match with 25 digs, and Costa had 12 digs on top of that. Lasell's freshman setter, Meghan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY) played very well and picked up 25 assists and 9 digs for the Lasers.
Following their 3-0 win over Pine Manor, the Lasers traveled to Babson College, and were defeated 0-3. Middle hitters Danielle Drapeau (Biddeford, ME) and Kelsey Schmidt (Ballston Spa, NY) were to top performers on offense for the Lasers, combining for 10 kills throughout the match. Nicole Wetterman (Dighton, MA) also had 4 kills in Lasell's attack.
Crozier had an additional 15 assist and 10 digs against Babson, and Major dug another 12 balls.
Lasell then finished their regular season in back-to-back matches in a GNAC tri-match. The Lasers first took on Simmons College before challenging the hosting Rivier Raiders.
Although the Lasers played a great game against Simmons, competing in all 5 sets before falling 12-15 in the last set, Lasell dropped both games at the Tri-match. The Lasers finished the season in 8th place in the GNAC with a 5-8 record, and the eighth seed in the GNAC tournament.
Major had 29 digs in the two matches, and Crozier had 41 assists and 15 total digs. Schmidt threw in 16 kills and 4 blocks for the day.
The Lasers qualified for the GNAC women's volleyball tournament as the eighth seed, and were matched against the first seeded Rivier College Raiders in the quarter finals.
Crozier led the team in digs with 16 in the three set match, while also dishing out 18 assists. Schmidt and Drapeau lead the offense with eight and five kills respectively, while Jenna-Lynn Geary (Marion, MA), Eileen Barrett (Ludlow, MA), and Wetterman each throwing in an additional 3 kills a piece.
Kayla Binnette (Biddeford, ME), Megan Gobeille (Lincoln, RI), Costa, and Geary had over 10 digs a piece as well.
Crozier was once again listed on the GNAC honor roll this week for coming out with a double-double in two matches, totaling 81 assists and 34 digs in thirteen total sets.
The hosting Raiders took the game in three sets, and the Lasers finished their season at 9-20.
Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team also completed their 2008 regular season this week, with a 0-1 loss to Brandeis University. Though the Lasers played a great match against the Judges, they could not connect with the net and left with their seven game winning streak snapped.
Lasell's Zach Gagne (Somerset, MA) and Kyle Cronin (Weymouth, MA) led the Lasers attack offensively, combining for all shots on goal. However, the Brandeis keeper picked up brilliant saves and allowed no goals.
Matthew Bruninghaus (Plymouth, MA) played a great game in goal for the Lasers, picking up 3 saves overall in the matchup. The GNAC recognized Bruninghaus (left) this week for his play in net and selected him for the Rookie of the Week.
The Lasers then began their trek into the GNAC men's soccer tournament. Lasell was the second seeded team and matched up against seventh seed Albertus Magnus College in the quarter finals.
Tholemson Francois (Stoughton, MA) was the first to score for Lasell, giving the Lasers an early lead. Following a game tying goal by the Falcons in the second half, Lasell's Gagne broke out the game winning goal being led by defender Paul Meucci (Vernon, CT) on a breakaway.
The Lasers came up with a 3-1 win over the Falcons when Francois padded a third goal late in the second period, assisted by Matt Tieri (Billerica, MA). Keeper Julian Dutton (Madison, CT) picked up 3 saves in the shutout.
Lasell's defense deserved a lot of credit in the win over Albertus Magnus. Meucci, Sean Fisher (Griswold, CT) and Rocco Mazzaferro (Niskayuna, NY) played great in the back field for Lasell.
With the win over the Falcons, the Lasers moved onto the semi-finals on their home field against Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Though the Lasers had spurts of greatness, they could not take control of the game, and they lost to the Monks, 0-2.
Both Shane Vinnicombe (Pomfret Center, CT) and Gagne made strong attempts on goal, but were unsuccessful. Although the outcome was not in their favor, Dutton played a fine match in net, making 3 huge saves.
In addition to Bruninghaus being honored by the GNAC this week, Gagne and Dutton were named to the weekly Honor Roll.
The men's soccer team has a 12-7-0 overall record. The Lasers will hope for a seeding in the ECAC post season tournament. Pairings will be announced November 10th.
