Lasers' Updates 10/29/2008
Women's Soccer
The Lasers went 2-1 this past week, lifting their overall record to 9-4-2 this season. Lasell dropped their first game of the week against GNAC foe Emerson College when they scored a late goal to pull ahead from the Lasers 2-1. Rookie midfielder Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) scored the Lasers only goal that game, connecting off a scramble in front of the Emerson net. Goalkeepers Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, MA) and Jamie Remmers (West Islip, NY) made 16 combined saves in the Emerson game.
The women's soccer team bounced back from that loss to take a huge win away from Lesley University on Thursday. The Lynx were undefeated in their NECC conference and boast an impressive 15-2-1 record this season, but the Lasers defeated them 1-0. Liz McGeoy (Doylestown, PA) struck this time for the Lasers, picking up her 5th goal of the season, and second game winning goal. Remmers had 9 saves in the 90 minute matchup and picked up her third full shutout of the season.
The final victory of the week for the Lasers came against non-conference opponent Wheelock College. The Lasers dominated the Wildcats and broke out a 8-0 win. Eight Lasell athletes scored in the game, with Margaret Carvalho (Swansea, MA) and Kaitlyn Fields (Stoneham, MA) producing their first goals of the season, unassisted. McGeoy and Hessler each scored a goal apiece, and Olivia Tsakiris (Grosvenordale, CT), Alyssa Ferreri (Southbury, CT), Molly Clarke (Kinsington, CT), and Allyson Bushey (Westminster, MA) completed the scoring.
The Lasers finished in 6th place in the GNAC and will take on Emmanuel College on Sunday, Nov. 2nd in the quarterfinals of the GNAC tournament.
Field Hockey
The Lasers field hockey team dropped two NAC games this weekend to Husson College and Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
The Lasers first matched up against the Eagles of Husson College. The Eagles were dominant throughout the match, but the Lasers did find scoring opportunities with Meagan DeAndrade (New Bedford, MA) attempting 5 shots on the Eagles goalkeeper, and Hannah Cebry (Burlington, CT) taking two shots.
Lasell's keeper, Christine Thornton (Canton, MA) saw a lot of pressure from Hussons forwards. Thornton had 17 saves in the match, with the Eagles taking 30 shots and 16 penalty corners.
Cebry did score the lone goal for the Lasers in the game, when DeAndrade sent the ball to Cebry in the circle off a penalty corner to score with no time left on the clock. The lasers lost that game 6-1.
On Sunday, the Lasers took on Saint Joseph's (ME) who finished in a three way tie for first in the NAC. The Monks outshot Lasell from the beginning, and the Laser went down in an early 0-3 deficit, before Caitlyn Walker (Middlebury, CT) tallied the Lasers goal at 39:00. Walker's goal marked her 20th of the season. DeAndrade picked up the assist.
Thornton made seven saves during her time in goal for the Lasers, and Amanda Miller (Fall River, MA) made an additional five saves during her 41 minutes as keeper.
The NAC tournament seedings were also announced after this weekend's final conference games. St. Joseph's, UMaine Farmington, and Castleton finished in a three way tie for first, warranting a tie-breaker for seedings. Lasell finished in 5th place and will face 4th seeded Husson College on Wednesday, October 29th in the quartfinal round. The game will be played at Husson. The victor of that game will play on Saturday, November 1st.
Women's Volleyball
The Lasers finished a tough week at 0-2 last week, while staying close in both matches at away sites. Lasell first took on the Seahawks of Salve Regina University, who snapped the Lasers 4 game winning streak by winning in three sets. However, the Lasers stayed close throughout the match, dropping no set by more than 4 points.
Kelsey Schmidt (Ballston Spa, NY) continues her fine play for the Lasers going 11 for 17 in attacks. Schmidt also was huge at the net with 3 blocks on the evening.
Danielle Drapeau (Biddeford, ME) was also strong for the Lasers, with 7 kills, 4 digs, 4 service aces, and 1.5 blocks. Melanie Costa (Ludlow, MA) had a team high 21 digs, while Amanda Major (Southbury, CT) and Meghan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY) were close behind with 18 apiece. Jenna-Lynn Geary (Marion, MA) produced an additional 16 dug balls for Lasell.
Crozier (left) has been playing extremely well for the Lasers in recent matches. She was honored this week by the GNAC as the Rookie of the Week for her fine play. Crozier had 20 assists in the Salve game, giving her a double-double with assists and digs.
Crozier has picked up 373 total assists this season so far, and is already in the top 10 assist leaders in Lasell's history. Crozier is averaging 4.55 assists per set.
Crozier is also on target to be in a top statistical spot in the digs category as well. She has 156 digs this season in 82 sets.
In the second match of the week, the Lasers took on Regis College. Once again the Lasers played incredibly strong against the Pride, but lost in the fifth set 13-15.
The Lasers dropped the first two sets of the game, before rebounding to win games three and four. Crozier once again had a double-double for the lasers with 35 assists and 15 digs, along with two service aces. Schmidt had a team high 13 kills in the match, and Drapeau threw in another 11 kills. Nicole Wetterman (Dighton, MA) was close to her with 9 kills playing on the right side.
Major, Costa, and Geary combined for 47 digs on defense for the
Lasers. Geary also had 7 kills.
The Lasers finished the week 8-16, and 4-5 in the conference. They will travel to Rivier College on Saturday for their final regular season GNAC matches against Rivier and Simmons.
Men's Soccer
Men's soccer finished this week with two big wins, and finished the week at 11-5-0 and 8-1-0 in the conference. The Lasers finished regular season conference play in second place in the league behind Norwich University, who gave the Lasers their only conference loss this season.
The week opened in non-conference action with UMass Dartmouth. The contest started with a Corsair goal at 34:04, to give UMass the 1-0 advantage. The lead did not last long though, as the Lasers struck back just ten minutes later. With 26 second left in the half, Tholemson Francois (Stoughton, MA) sent a pass straight in front of the Corsairs net to Joshua Martinez (Milton, MA) who one-touched the ball to Kyle Cronin (Weymouth, MA) who scored to tie the game.
Lasell didn't have to wait long to gain control of the game in the second half. Just twenty second in, Cronin was fouled in the penalty box, resulting in a penalty shot by Francois to give the Lasers the lead and the win.
The Lasers scored once more when Cronin sent a pass to Shane Vinnicombe (Pomfret Center, CT) to add to Lasell's edge. Goalkeeper Julian Dutton (Madison, CT) came up with 9 saves in the 3-1 win.
The following game pitted the Lasers against conference opponent Johnson & Wales University in the Lasers final regular season GNAC matchup.
It wasn't until the second half of play when the first goal was scored. With less than 35 minutes left in the game, Vinnicombe sent a leading pass to Dan Hatch (Avon, MA) who maneuvered around the Wildcats goalie to score and open up the game for the Lasers.
The remaining minutes of the game were in Lasell's control as Francois launched a pass to Zach Gagne (Somerset, MA) who finished, giving the Lasers a 2-0 lead. Followed by another Francois goal, assisted by Martinez. Matthew Bruninghaus (Plymouth, MA) had three saves in the complete shutout for the Lasers in net.
