LASERS' UPDATES 10/07/08 |
Men's Soccer
The Lasers had a 1-1 week, playing two conference games at home. The first GNAC matchup was with Norwich University. The teams were both undefeated in the conference, and fighting for the first place spot. Though the Lasers outshot the Cadets 26-17, and had 10 more corner kick opportunities, Norwich took home the victory 3-0.
Lasell's freshman goalkeeper Matthew Bruninghaus (Plymouth, MA) (left) made several extraordinary saves, playing extremely well, and stopping 11 Norwich shots. Shane Vinnicombe (Pomfret Center, CT) and Zach Gagne (Somerset, MA) provided the brunt of the offensive attack, combining for 12 shots. Defensively, Rocco Mazzaferro (Niskayuna, NY) and Brandon Hanss (Halifax, MA) continued to protect the back field.
The Lasers then took on the Falcons of Albertus Magnus on Saturday at Taylor Field. Once again, Mazzaferro and Hanss, along with Sean Fisher (Griswold, CT) and Paul Meucci (Vernon, CT) played tremendous defense, which was the key to opening up offensive opportunities for the Lasers. Mazzaferro had his first assist of the season when he fed Steve Petrin (Vernon, CT) who scored the game winning goal. Robert Gonzalez (Palmdale, CA) scored his first goal of the season after being set up by Gagne. Goalkeeper Julian Dutton (Madison, CT) picked up his third shutout of the season, making 6 saves.
The Lasers ended the week ranked in second place in the GNAC.
Women's Soccer
The Lasers' women's soccer team went 1-0 this week beating fellow GNAC opponent Albertus Magnus College on Taylor Field. Freshman goalie Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, MA) was phenomenal for the Lasers, picking up her first career shutout and making 11 saves in 80 minutes. Stickley (right) is currently ranked 2nd in the GNAC for saves per game, averaging .882.
Alyssa Ferreri (Southbury, CT) continues her success on the field for the Lasers, scoring her 4th season goal against the Falcons off a corner kick by Alaina Mitrano (Medford, MA). Mitrano is ranked 1st in the GNAC in assists per game (.75), and Ferreri is ranked third in game winning goals (3).
Also scoring for the Lasers on Saturday was Allyson Bushey (Westminister, MA) who took a 40 foot shot which sailed over the opposing goalkeepers head.
The Lasers are 4-3-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.

Women's Volleyball
It was a heartbreaking week for the Lasers women's volleyball team, who played extremely well, but dropped two matches in the week.
The Lasers opened against Wentworth Institute of Technology. Though Lasell started by winning the first two sets of the match, WIT fought back to win the next three games in dramatic fashion. The Lasers had strong performances by senior captains Nicole Wetterman (Dighton, MA) (left) and Kelsey Schmidt (Ballston Spa, NY) (far right) as well as junior captain Amanda Major (Southbury, CT) (inset right). Wetterman swung a clip of .296 for the night, and picked up 11 kills in the process, while Schmidt wasn't far behind with 9 kills. Major incredible on defense, picking up 30 digs in the five set match.
Also playing well for the Lasers were freshman Danielle Drapeau (Biddeford, ME) and Eileen Barrett (Ludlow, MA) each of whom provided 3 solo blocks in the match. Drapeau also hit a team best .304 clip, notching 8 kills, Barrett put down an additional 5.
In the Lasers second match of the week, their determination and heart kept them in close sets with GNAC rival Norwich University. Norwich has only lost one match this season, and the Lasers were close to giving them their second. The Lasers' determination on defense was evident with 5 athletes posting double figures in digs.
Major had another 30 dig night, an impressive feat in only 3 sets, while Wetterman, Melanie Costa (Ludlow, MA), Meghan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY), and Jenna-Lynn Geary (Marion, MA) each picked up more than ten.
The Lasers offense was spread out as well with Wetterman, Geary, Schmidt, and Drapeau each coming out with over 5 kills. Crozier assisted 17 of those kills.
The Lasers are now 5-11 overall and 2-3 in the GNAC.
