Men's Soccer
Lasers Tie in Double OT
Lasell College and Suffolk University met in a GNAC match last Thursday, September 17. The game ended in a 1-1 tie after double overtime. Paul Meucci (Vernon, CT) was able to score Lasell's first and only goal which came from the corner kick of Shane Vinnecombe (Pomfret Center, CT). Even with a couple more close kicks by the Lasers, they were unable to get it past with Suffolk University's goalie Jack DeJesus (Swampscott, Mass.). Lasell entered half time with the 1-0 lead.
Nine minutes into the second half, Suffolk's Danny Lloyd (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) drove one past the Lasell defense and into the goal. The score would remain 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Not many shots on goal were recorded in the double overtime which led to the match ending in a 1-1 tie.
The Lasers also met in another GNAC match last week against the Emerson College Lions. The Lasers posted a 4-1 win over Emerson. Dan Hatch (Avon, MA) scored early on after receiving a pass from Tholemson Francois (Stoneham, Mass.). At 12 minutes, Robby Gonzalez (Palmdale, CA) scored with the assist by Shane Vinnecombe (Pomfret Center, CT) to make the score 2-0. Just a couple minutes later Paul Meucci (Venon, Conn.) scored his third goal of the season after a long pass from Shane Vinnecombe (Pomfret Center, CT). The Lasers entered half time with a 3-0 lead.
Dan Hatch would score again in the 68th minute after a pass from Zachary Johnson (Westbrook, ME). The Lasers sat comfortably with a 4-0 lead over the Lions until Mike Giles (Wakefield, RI) of Emerson knocked a loose ball into the Lasers net. The Lasers are now 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the GNAC. The Lasers will travel to UMASS-Dartmouth on Tuesday September 22nd with the game time set for 4 pm.
Hatch (far left) was selected as GNAC Player of the Week for his efforts, and goalkeeper Julian Dutton (Madison Conn.) was selected as the Goalkeeper of the Week. Hatch is currently fifth in the GNAC in total points for the season, points per game, and goals. Dutton (inset left) is ranked 2nd in save percentage (.848) and 1st in saves per game (7.0).
Women's Soccer
Women's soccer ends in a tie after double overtime
Lasell College and Emmanuel College met in a GNAC match last Thursday afternoon. The Lasers ended in a 3-3 tie against the rival Saints. The Lasers outshot the Saints in the first half 10-3, however, the match entered halftime scoreless which lead to an exciting second half.
At a little over 50 minutes, Jordynn Frollo (Uxbridge, Mass.) was able to find the back of the net with the assist from Molly Clarke (Berlin, Conn.). About five minutes later, the Saint's Kate McKenna (Holyoke, Mass.) would drive one past Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, Mass). With eighteen minutes left in the match, Liz McGeoy (Doylestown, PA) would take a shot wide of the goal, but Alaina Mitrano (Medford, Mass.) was in the right spot to kick it in and place the Lasers on top 2-1. Just a couple minutes later, McKenna would find the back of the net once again for Emmanuel, tying the match at 2-2. The Saints took the lead after Elizabeth Blasser (Pembroke, Mass.) scored with only 7 minutes to play. However, Lasell's Courtney Callanan (Taunton, Mass.) was able to capitalize on a corner kick from Jordynn Frollo which tied the game 3-3 at the end of regulation.
Even with the Lasers out shooting the Saints in double overtime, no goals were scored the game would end in a 3-3 tie. Lasell's overall record is now 2-2-1 and 1-0-1 in the GNAC.
Women's Volleyball
Women's volleyball goes 2-0 this weekend
The Lasell College women's volleyball team played in a GNAC tri-match this weekend at Pine Manor College. The Lasers would beat both Pine Manor and Albertus Magnus 3-0 which helped their overall record to 4-6, and 2-1 in the GNAC.
In their first match against Pine Manor College, Danielle Drapeau (Biddeford, ME) took control with 13 kills in the match. Megan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY) also showed some leadership on the court with 28 total assists and 6 serve aces. The entire team served 16 aces during the match leading to their 3-0 win over Pine Manor; 25-9, 25-14, and 25-13.
Lasell would also play another GNAC match against Albertus Magnus. The 3-0 victory was lead by Elizabeth Nichols (Southington, CT) who ended with 8 kills in the match. Chelsea Rohrig (Milford, MA) and Eileen Barrett (Ludlow, MA) put up 6 kills each as well. Megan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY) had 29 assists out of the 32 recorded and the Lasers put up 8 blocks in order to get the win in three games; 25-18, 25-5 and 25-9.
Field Hockey
Lasers fall in first NAC game
The Lasers played Castleton State College in a NAC game on September 19th. Despite a 10-3 loss, the lasers played well against Castleton State, who is predicted to be the top team in the NAC this year.
With this loss, Lasell falls to 0-1 in the NAC, and 0-5 overall. Castleton entered halftime with the 3-0 lead and the Lasers did not score until the 51st minute when Sarah Jannuzzi (Glen, NH) registered an unassisted goal past Castleton's keeper Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, VT). Tia Pratt (S. Paris, ME) scored a solo goal and with the assist from Jannuzzi. Natasha Wood (White River, VT) would score the third and final goal for the Lasers.
Christine Thornton (Canton, Mass.) made 15 saves on day as well.
