Brendan McGourn of the Lasell College men’s volleyball team is in this week’s athlete spotlight.
The sophomore setter from Southington, Connecticut has had quite an impressive two-year career with the Lasers. As a freshman, he was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, GNAC First Team All-Conference, and finished the year ranked 15th in the NCAA Division III men’s volleyball statistics for assists per game (10.21). As a sophomore, Brendan has continued to stand out. He was selected as a team captain and is currently ranked 14th in the nation in Division III for assists per set, averaging 10.87 per game, as well as 2nd in the GNAC.
Brendan holds the all-time record for assists per set in a season, averaging 10.21 during the 2009 season, and is looking to break that record this year as he is currently averaging 10.87 assists per set. He is also 2nd in all-time career assists, as only a sophomore, having collected 1627 total helpers in two seasons. He is in line to break the Lasers’ all-time record, of 2,636 total assists, by the time he graduates.
In addition to distributing the ball well, Brendan is a complete player, contributing 142 career kills, 51 career aces, 233 career digs, and 64 career blocks. He averages just under one kill per set (.91) as well as 1.5 digs per set. He has played in over 150 games for the Blue & White, and in 49 total matches.

Our January bus trip with no heat!
Do you have any superstitions before you go into a match?
Not really but I always shower before games.
What do you do in your free time away from athletics?
I coach volleyball for the Smash Volleyball Club. I also just found out that I'm going to be the Varsity head coach at Mount Alvernia next Fall.
Do you plan on playing or coaching after you finish your career at Lasell?
Of course!
Who has been a great influence in your life?
My brother played a huge role in making me who I am today.
What is a little known fact about you?
I can lick my elbow. Yes, it is possible!
Where do you hope to be after graduation?
I hope to go to California or Europe, coaching or playing.
