Lasell Suffers First Loss of the Year as Bridgewater State Shuts Down Men's Soccer at Home
NEWTON, MA- Bridgewater State men's soccer cracked Lasell College's five-game winning streak, and a previously unbeaten record, with a 3-0 defeat of the Lasers Wednesday afternoon on Taylor Field. The setback leaves Lasell's overall record at 6-1-1 this year while the Bears' slate lifts to 4-3-1.
Lasell got off to a slow start, unable to find their footing as they got just three shots off in 30 minutes of play, and each of them was wide of the goal. Bridgewater, on the other hand, took a quick advantage just 8:50 into play when Ramon Ambrosio (Canton, MA) delivered a cross field pass to Simao Mendes (Brocton, MA) who scored from the left side to put the Bears on top ,1-0.
The Lasers would continue to attack, leading to a 9-7 margin in shooting through halftime, but only one of those attempts was fired on target. Bridgewater net minder Joe Parsons (Springfield, MA) was able to knock aside the attempt, shot by Lasell's Jonathan Klippert (Cumberland, ME), to keep the slight edge through the break.
Mendes then started the play that upped the score just nine minutes into the second frame. The junior forward directed a pass intended for Donald Flores (Cranston, RI) as he sprinted to Lasell goal. Flores collected the pass and completed on the play to give the visitor a two goal cushion.
The Bears never let up, out shooting Lasell 16-3 in the second half, and keeping the Lasers' freshman goalkeeper Aren Moorman (Somerset, NJ) at attention throughout the period. Moorman finished the period with seven saves.
With less than two minutes left to play, Mendes struck again, scooping up a long ball from Bryan Martin (Charlton, MA) and carrying it down center field before striking from 10 yards out to bring about the final score.
Both keepers faced penalty kicks in the final 10 minutes of play, but neither team profited from the opportunity. Parsons made three saves in the non-league shutout while Moorman ended the contest with nine stops.
On Saturday, October 1st, Lasell will travel to Johnson & Wales University for their next challenge. The Wildcats and the Lasers will begin play at 3:00 p.m.
