Lasers Suffer Two Game Setback to Blue Jays
NEWTON, MA- Lasell College softball suffered a two game Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) setback today on Taylor Field dropping the contests to St. Joseph College of Connecticut, 10-0 and 6-2. The Blue Jays build up their record to 14-12 and 10-2 in the league after the two game victory, while Lasell dips to 6-20 overall and 6-6 in conference action.

St. Joseph's strung together 15 hits in game one to produce their 10-0 shutout of the Lasers.  All nine Blue Jay batters had at least one hit led by Melanie Bush (Bristol, CT) who went 3-for-4 in the game, with all three hits earning her two bases, adding one run scored and one RBI. Stephanie Valerio (Wolcott, CT) went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run and Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, CT) added one hit with two RBI and one run.

Susie Waters (Wrentham, MA) and Nicole Williams (MIddletown, CT) added two knocks each while combining for three runs and Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, CT) and April Capanella (Berlin, CT) had one hit and one RBI each.

Starting pitcher Kristina Torres (Groton, CT) earned the shutout, giving up six hits, and retiring eight Laser batters on K's.

Lasell had five batters complete their six total hits in the loss.  Talia DeChiara (Kingston, MA) registered two hits, going 2-for-3 in the game while Michelle Torres (Waltham, MA), Kelly Silvia (Oak Bluffs, MA), Marissa McHugh (Plymouth, MA), and Rachelle Haas (Middleton, MA) each got a one-bag hit.

The loss was conferred upon Alison Saluti (Braintree, MA) who struck out two batters in seven innings.

Gall homered to put the Blue Jays on the board in game two in the top of the 2nd inning.  Lasell answered to take their first lead of the day in the bottom of the frame when Starkey reached base on a fielder's choice which led into Jacqueline Saluti (Braintree, MA) ripping a double into center field to bring in the tying run.  Courtney Moen (Brookfield, MA) singled into shallow center field to score Saluti, which put Lasell on top 2-1.

A Bush one-bag hit plated Williams in the top of the 3rd, which evened the score to 2-all with one out. Valerio scored on a RBI by Sullivan to regain the Blue Jays' advantage at the end of three.

Three more hits converted into two additional runs in the top of the 5th for the visitors.  Williams got on with an infield single and then stole second to move into scoring position.  A sacrifice bunt by Valerio advanced Williams to third base and a double by Waters scored the run.

Waters scored on Sullivan's second RBI of the game to complete scoring for the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, and in deficit of three runs (5-2), Lasell got three hits with singles by Jaqueline Saluti, Starkey, and Samantha Whynot (Randolph, MA).  With the bases loaded, and two outs, Emily Hummel (Hebron, CT) stepped in to relieve Kristin Parente (Burlington, CT) as the Blue Jays pitcher.  Hummel proceeded to get out of the inning unscathed with a fly out to right field which left the game tying runs on base.

One more run scored in the top of the 7th for the visitors when Sullivan batted in her third RBI of the game, and fifth of the day with a single into left field.  St. Joseph's produced a one-two-three bottom of the frame to end the game.

Jacqueline Saluti went 2-for-3 in the game with one run and one RBI and Moen added Lasell's second RBI on her sole hit of the game. Whynot recorded two hits and DeChiara, Silvia, and Santina Antoshak (Closter, NJ) each chalked up a hit apiece.  Starkey also registered one hit and one RBI.

Kirsten Mammola (North Reading, MA) struck out two Blue Jays in the game while allowing 10 hits and six earned runs in seven innings.

Parente picked up the win with two strike outs, nine hits and two runs.  Hummel pitched 1.1 innings of relief picking up one strikeout and allowing no hits.

Sullivan added two hits and three RBI to her first game statistics to finish the day with three hits and five RBI.  Bush and Williams both had two more knocks for the victors and Waters, Bush, and Gall each added one RBI.

On Wednesday, April 13th, Lasell will face non-conference opponent UMass Boston at the Beacons home field for a doubleheader to begin at 3:00 p.m.
