NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Jordan Aprea (Newington, Conn.) and junior Scott Sterenberg (Oceanside, N.Y.) posted eight kills apiece Friday evening as Lasell College defeated John Jay College, 3-0, in a non-conference men's volleyball match at The Doghouse.
The Lasers won by set scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-20, improving their record to 3-4 on the season. The Bloodhounds drop to 4-4 overall.
Aprea had eight winners and no errors on 18 attempts for a .444 attack percentage, while Sterenberg had eight kills and two errors on 16 attacks for a .375 percentage. Sophomore Conor Leary-Watson (Bethany, Conn.) added six kills in the win, and seniors Nate Gallo (North Providence, R.I.) and Andy Henriquez (Lawrence, Mass.) shared setting duties and compiled 11 and 10 assists, respectively.
Sophomore Dylan Senkiw (Rye, N.Y.) led the home team with eight kills and eight digs, while classmate Anthony Francois (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed four kills and four blocks.
Lasell jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first set and never surrendered the lead. The Lasers pushed their lead to 15-8 after a kill by Waitekus and went on to a 25-17 win in the opening set.
The teams traded points early on in the second set, but kills by Sterenberg and Waitekus pushed the Lasers ahead, 8-4. Lasell followed with an 8-3 surge to pull ahead, 16-7, and survived a late Bloodhound surge to take a 25-21 win in the middle set.
John Jay jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set, and held an 8-6 lead, but Lasell rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 13-8 advantage. The Lasers were up 16-15 when Aprea, sophomore Dillon DeSouza (Enfield, Conn.) and Leary-Watson made three straight kills to thwart any Bloodhound rally. The Lasers finished off the set and the match on a kill by Sterenberg.
Lasell remains in New York City for a Saturday tri-match at Hunter College against Hunter (10 a.m.) and New Paltz State (12 p.m.).
